The U.K. Is basically split into 'air' corridors. A little like the motorway network. Normally and there are exceptions to the rule, the east of the U.K. Has planes heading north and the West has them heading south. Just north of Birmingham you have a cross over a bit like the A5, you also have on further south almost inline with the M4.

So then to break down the flight data record for you.

Transit --> Location with Lat and Long and time.

So Liverpool at 532000n by 0025102w at 17.52 would be the location on the UK ordnance survey map and the time it is expected to fly over. The route took the southerly air corridor to the cross over point and then the northern corridor before splitting from the route to head to Scampton. Also of note is that they flew at between 500 and 2000 ft above sea level so would have been low to avoid the main air corridor traffic which is normally between 10 and 30,000 ft.

I have attached a live flight radar screen shot just taken to show you why we need a route system. To say we have a few planes flying at any one time is an understatement.
