Well we are done for today. We managed to get the bonnet to a stage that we need to get the rest of the Zed too before we can go onto the next stage. It looks as though we are now back to a stage when someone machine polished it with around 6 inch pads as we can now see the rotor marks they have left befind. The next stage will be to remove these after Grumpy has finished the remaining panels. I have left him all my kit and he has more or less done the work himself with me advising.
Final result on bonnet.

We have managed to bring the shine back on the bonnet. We will need to give it another go once Dave has done the other panels but i think we can get rid of the rotor marks with a medium pad and cutting polish then use the finer compoumd and polish. The paint underneath on close inspection is shocking as Dave will agree. The inperfections not counting the rotor marks looks to be in the paint itself.

Great results Bill and you seem to have found the cause of the problem.
Good paint thickness but as you said it's been painted so would be nice to know top coat thickness...

Looking loads better than it was, Are you putting a sealant on it after or Shield.?

Well done both of you....It was win or bust really and it looks like you are winning....

I used the Autofinese sealant then just coated the swissvax shield on top. It should hold up untill we do it one more time to remove the rotor marks. The depths are shocking. I would of expected around 160 to 280 microns with it being painted but in a lot of places we were getting 380 to 420 microns which in away tells me it has probably been painted twice since manufacture or the last respray was that shocking they just kept applying it to hide the bad areas

Now having a nice beer. Thanks Grumpy for supplying me my fav beer.
Really enjoyed working on Daves car and i am sure we can improve it even more than we have.
Just to get the bonnet to this stage has took 6 hours. I calculated Dave has got around 12 hours to do then it will all start again to get rid of the issues found.

I reckon it will be around 40 to 60 hours work in total to get it right. We spent 6 hours on the bonnet but know we need to spend at least the same again before it is right. Hence why i got Dave to do as much as possible to get him confident with the rotary so he can do it at his leisure over the winter months.

A huge thanks to Bill for his time today and leaving me his kit to get the job finished. It has been a hell of a learning curve but very rewarding. There are a lot of faults in the paint which I'm furious about but it's to late for that now. The bonnet is a huge improvement and hopefully I'll get the rest of the car up to the same level.
