I see them from my house most weekends. we are on the flight path south to many shows. If we hear them we still run outside to see them fly by. They are awesome things. The noise is special. You never mistake them for anything but what they are.
I was really lucky a few weeks ago and had a Spitfire circling the house at low level for a local fete. It banked around several times at a few hundred metres height. Wow!!! Tingling stuff.
My mother tells stories of watching dog fights over somerset in her youth. That must have been something else. The fear and adrenalin that was going through her has lived in her memory. Cheering for your team isn't close.
She lost a cousin in his first Lancaster flight over Germany, so the war was very real to her and her family. We all forget the guys that flew, but they were all heroes of their time and those planes are a real reminder.
We all owe a great debt to those planes and crew, and that should be remembered, but as a mechanical object they are also a work of art.
The German cars we all drive are testament to another great nation that was sucked into the political nightmare. I forget the figures but I'm pretty sure it was something less than 44% of the Germans voted for Hitler. A Nation dragged into a nightmare by far less than a majority. Those that voted had no idea what they were voting for. Nationalist fervour took precedent. Within 3 weeks he'd passed a bill outlawing al other parties and making himself dictator. All opposition swept aside.
We are in a strange world of uncertainties again at present. Nationalism all over Europe and the Middle East is on the increase. In a globalised world that is strange. You would expect that there would be more understanding, but radical views are becoming stronger. What a shame.
Use your votes wisely!... F...ing Politicians!!!
PS. I don't quite know how I got onto the rant bit!! Sorry!!... Another glass of wine anyone???
