Had a dash cam for 6 months. I see and record incidents from down right stupid and careless to dangerous driving almost every day. I've only once resorted to taking video to the police but that was something that was way beyond acceptable stupidity - deliberately driving over a 20 foot grass verge and then over the pavement to miss out a mini-roundabout. However, I don't believe anything was done about it despite being supported by video from a garage forecourt. I reported it because its a section of path that local infant school children use (from the school where I am governor) and would have been using just a short while before. The driver couldn't see if anyone was just around the corner - the outcome could have been deadly. It is at one end of a stretch of road that has seen at least 10 killed and dozens injured over a few years. The police here don't seem to give a s**t even when incontrovertible evidence is given to them. It will take more deaths I suspect. They certainly don't seem to be receptive to use of dashcam footage. They wouldn't even take a verbal account of the incident - I had to fill out a ten page form! Maybe I should have called 999.

In six months I've had drivers try and force their way in by overtaking on a roundabout and cutting in to a single carriageway on three occasions. Drivers overtaking in to and on the outside of blind bends. One driver who swerved and cut right across 4 lanes on an island just 2 feet in front of me to got to the exit they wanted. I have seen lorry drivers texting (one as he came up to and nearly running over a cyclist). The usual undertakers on motorways. It's only when you get it on camera that you see how appalling lots of the driving on our roads is.

Just use your dash cam to protect your interests with insurers - the police don't care what you get unless I suspect someone is actually injured. What I don't know is, if should you be involved in an incident yourself, can the police can seize images from your dash cam without a court order if you refuse to hand it over? It is your property as is any copyright. Can it be used against you without your permission?

HT, I can remember driving through Amsterdam at the time they let everyone go home from Uni, school, work, and I've never seen anything remotely like it since. There was literally a sea of cyclists came from no where, I actually tried to find somewhere to pull over to get out of what I felt I couldn't cope with. Rha, Roy
You are more than right there, I have not driven there for a long time now, it was incoming from every direction. Photo at Central Station Amsterdam.......

I find it very very difficult to comment about cyclists on the road ........... :(
So I'm not even going to go their :p

Getting back to camera's in the car ........ :)
I just find them off putting when I'm behind a vehicle ....... :p
Stuck in traffic and it seams to be stuck in your face :)
I suppose they are great if you have a accident and it isn't your fault :)
It's a great way to prove it , but would that stand for a court of law ;)
As I know that our home ones don't :)

go on youtube i can see a good reason for them, one that would have been of use to me was when in b&q car in front turned out of the car park i guess he forgot something stopped put it in reverse i stopped thinking he had seen me but no he came straight back at me, sounded the horn no good he came straight back into the front of my car, although he admitted fault when it got to the insurance they claimed that there was no proof that i did not drive into him, rear end shunt driver at back always at fault, unknown to them a witness saw what had happened and gave me his address with out this i would have lost my no claims and had to repair my own car this is were a dash cam would have come in use, and i guess there are untold amount of stories out there, iam sure there are a lot of you out there that would not agree but insurance companys at least some of them any way are just legal highway robbers, so next time you have a cam staring at you smile put your thumb pull funny faces so when he plays it back they will smile so then you know you have made some one happy

Having a car cam would have saved the misery I went through when my Z4 got rear ended on the M6 in Cheshire. I would have been able to easily prove that the other driver was a lying s***, and was trying to get injury payments for him and his son. I got letters from his solicitor before I even got a claim form from my insurers that I phoned 2 hours afterwards.

The fact he drove in to the back of me on the hard shoulder would have been clear, rather than me "allegedly" side swiping his bonnet when changing lanes (despite the fact there is no way I could actually have hit him that way at all).

The other downside to his blatant lying was that I was denied a "like for like" rental car, and would have had to have a Nissan Micra or the likes for the duration of the repairs (which was nearly 3 months & a long story).

p.s. I've tidied the thread and moved it to the Gadgets section as it's turning in to a good discussion point!

I have had a dash cam front and rear for just over a month and have noticed that the 'tail gaters' have greatly reduced! I have placed the rear camera right in the middle of my perspex wind deflector so the person behind me cannot miss it!

Mind you sometimes I do wonder how the person sitting behind me feels about the camera in their face.
So far I have not seen any frowning or angry faces, obscene jestures, or anything else.
