Personally I don't like the sound of the super charges 4cyl. engine as much as a straight 6. Not a huge Merc fan anyway. But I was looking at those when someone suggested a Z3 7 years ago.

I've had an SLK 230 Kompressor in silver with red leather. It was actually a really lovely car and I did really like it but it's not a Z3 or Z4 by a long shot. It's a great car, it's just not a great sports car if that makes sense. Lovely to drive and comfortable, fast as well to be fair to it. Super practical but I found it flew completely under the radar. Nobody batted an eyelid when you drove it, which not that you necessarily want the 'look at me' effect of driving a Farrari or something but I get people stopping me at petrol stations to talk about my Z3 and I think that's nice. People are interested and they want to know about it and what's it like to drive.

Also the 230 4 cylinder is not a nice sounding engine, especially coupled to the auto box it's just a boring drone. Nothing like the rasp, pops and crackles out the back of an M44 or even an MX5.

The SLK for me is too much of a compromise, I'd buy one for my girlfriend to use and I could steal it now and then. But personally would not own one as a weekend fun car.

Why was that?
it was a nice car with the roof down, but that was probably just the 'driving a convertible' effect.
When the roof was up I may as well have been in a vectra or focus. Thats how much more special it drove..
Don't get me started on Mercedes dealership and aftercare... and £200 for just an oil service....

None of the Z4s have a space saver wheel

Does the pre-facelift Z4 have a space saver wheel?
No spare wheel - they come with run-flats. That is until you've had enough of them, then its a compressor and a can of foaming goo...

I can't believe I missed a good "which is better" thread. I used my lightly modified Z3 3.0 on the track and a good mixture of road conditions. Long journeys, short journeys, spirited b roads, commuting etc. It was an extremely capable car (and it was a bit of a handsome hector) but................

I had no problem at all making the move to the Z4 3.0. The Z4 is an epic car for the money and needs very little in the way of modifying to make it handle well. Early 3.0's come fitted with the M-tech suspension as standard which is a bonus. Ditching the runflats is a must. I've test driven S2000's, MX5's, mercs and a few other 2 seaters. They were either under powered, had crap handling or were boring to look at.

Compared to my old VX220 it is virtually a luxury motor!

If you buy a Z4 and don't like it, the residuals are holding well at the moment so you could easily sell it on and not loose money. Go for it, they are great cars.
