Thanks Brian, as I said I'm not really asking on my behalf but maybe for others who might not have thought of these little issues. Cheers to you and Andy and Garry too.

Maybe you guys need new batteries.
I can leave my Z for weeks and it starts everytime.
I am on my third battery in as many years and am very careful about how I use it - no starts with the fan and radio going etc. - maybe it just depends on the model you're driving. There are an awful lot of electronic gadgets in a Z4M, who knows what that computer sitting there on the top of the dash is doing when I'm not looking ...

Three batteries in three years is not normal. Did they run a check on your charging system when they were changed. I suspect your alternator is overcharging and causing your battery problems. Hopefully someone else could verify this for you. If that is in fact what is happening you need to get it rectified ASAP and a trickle charger won't really help. @Lee, @t-tony, @zedonist , etc HELP!!

If the electrical system checks out and the alternator is working, it will be a bad earth or an electrical relay, usually fitting things like tow bars, after market stereos, fog lights etc will cause battery drain, and the latest one is after market LED's. But for the age of some of these cars it could be as simple as a corroded earth point.

I've had all this stuff checked a couple of weeks ago, thanks, alternator is apaprently ok, no charging problems. I trust the garage/mechanics, as I've known them a lifetime. and have no aftermarket stuff.
One thing that has occurred to me, could it be the alarm that drains the battery when it is standing for week? That lights flashes constantly, so how much power does that use?

Well Charlotte, I can't recall of a vehicle needing a new battery every year even in our harsh conditions. Either you've hit a bad batch of batteries if they're replacing like for like or you have something possessing your car that is drinking battery power. I would pull the alternator and have them bench test it to insure that it is regulating power consistently. I have a Jeep that ate two batteries very quickly and it turned out to be a short in the wiring in the back hatch. I isolated the problem finally by pulling one fuse at a time and waiting for results. Very time consuming but sourced the problem area. Hopefully more knowledgable people than I am will have better recommendations to offer up, JIM

The alarm light will only be an LED so will use virtually no power at all as do all LED's. I would try disconnecting the battery when the car is to be stood and see if it will start ok when re-connected.
