You can do it without removing the spare wheel Just push the heat shield to one side the bottle fits perfectly between

On the advice of Opie in the M I used Gulf Competition 75W 140 LS for the diff and Titan ATF 5005 for the box (the gearbox is so smooth now with the ATF)

did my own Diff oil a few months ago, and at the same time removed the diff cover polished it, and installed new gasket, and checked condition of diff mounting bush mine was real good looked like new...



had the gearbox oil changed about a month ago by my local mechanic as he was doing the engine oil at the same time, I gave him 5 litre of synthetic atf to use, cost me £20 for the engine oil, and gearbox oil change.. must say the gear change is loads better now... after the change....

Although it's a manual, it needs an ATF fluid and the best options are the Red Line D4 or Fuchs ATF5005, although the others are fine as cheaper alternatives.

Hi

ATF is a pretty common choice for manual boxes. Pretty much all BMWs from 92-00 used it, some of them after that as well, plus plenty of other things such as Mercs, Fords, Vauxhalls, a few Nissans and some others I can't think of right now. While some of those 75w-90s are fine for gearboxes, not all are in all cars that need a 75w-90.

You need about 1.5L each for the gearbox and diff.

Hi @Davyhoogy apologies I forgot I said I would post some info after I had done mine.........i did but on my progress thread "made a start today"..
Gear box oil 2 litres Redline D4 used 1.5 litres approx. Has made gear changes smoother and the box quieter.
Diff oil 2litres Castrol syntrax 2 litres and it took just about all of it.
Got mine from @oilman Opie oils.

In my 2.8 I used 1.6 litres off castrol syntrax 75-140 , filled from in the boot bye a funnel and 1/4 inch tubing, with the spare wheel carrier undone, and the gearbox was off opie , I think it was Fuchs Titan, and took around just over a litre, again with a tube a funnel at the top off the engine, is so much easier that way than squeezing bottles underneath the car, also iff ure unsure what amount to use,use the golden rule ,what comes out ,goes back in iff u use a measuring jug, iff ure unsure what grade to use for ure car, phone opie great service , and price,also don't forget to replace ure oem sealing washer for diff and gearbox, there not to dear even off the dealers.

I also forget to mention, that doing the earls braided clutch hose is the best thing I've done to my Zed , it stops that oem hose expanding every time u push ure clutch in , and also it gets rid off the clutch delay valve, mine was sometimes really really notchy, not no more more, it's like like silk now, iff I had to do it again though , I'd pay a good mechanic to do it, as u need brake flare spannes , pressure bleeders to rebleed the system , and it's a bi*** to bleed tucked up in the gearbox tunnel, ohh I'd love a four poster ramp

Great I'll look into it thanks, but as you say seems like quite a bit of work with bleeding etc. Although the results sound worth it!

On the original topic, here is a picture of my haul last month, oils from Opie, these were their over the counter recommendations for engine, gearbox and diff oil for a 98 2.8 manual:
