Thanks mate. They are 6mm stainless bolts with 6mm spline head. Spline rounded out, T45 tapped in and rounded out. May be a drilling job but will be hard. Would've been better if it had snapped off.

can anyone confirm the spline bit size please is it 6mm 12 point spline or 8mm 12 point spline.?

and any thoughts on what good quality make of spline bit i need to use.. would a shorter one be better...?

They are 8mm Al. I found a long bit best but have the wheels on the car and stood on its wheels.

thanks i found a spline bit whilst looking through my tool kit yesterday, dont know if i trust it but it does fit...

Mine isn't a well known brand Al. All you can do is try it mate, just make sure it's fully home in the bolt head before turning.

Slightly tap it home with a small hammer and slightly tighten before trying to undo. I only snapped 2 off on all four wheels when I did mine.

tense moment tonight.......

my technique was this..............

wheel on bench plenty of light to see whats going on

each bolt given a spray of xcp penetrating oil bought yesterday for £1.29

next step hit each bolt with hammer about 10 times with the socket and m8 spline bit to let it know who's boss..

next step spray again with xcp penetrating oil...

leave for 20 mins while having food...

next step relieve tension on bolt by applying a fairly constant torque on a 12 inch t bar in both clockwise and anti clockwise direction hitting with small hammer while maintaining the constant torque

i did this in pairs of 4 bolts..

then start undoing once its moving give it a small tap with hammer to thank it...!!!!!

just hope i get the same luck with the other three wheels i dont hold much hope but you never know..

Thats good news, however I have done 2 sets of split rims and on both sets the fronts have been fine and I have encountered problems on the rears, hoipe you have better luck

this was a rear and i be doing the other rear next... i just hope they all come out successfully...i love to get them looking as nice as yours... thinking on polishing the lip and painting the inside of the wheel bright chrome silver, and the hub where the wheel bolts on undecided on colour yet...

off over powder coaters later to get an idea of cost for refurbing the centre disks, and media blasting the rims... which i will paint myself..

quick update.. successfully done the all the wheels, bolts removed successfully...

I can now look at stripping the paint off the wheels and deciding on what to do with them

went over powder coaters in merthyr yesterday, they were very helpful didnt have any samples there to show me but said they could do the centres for £30 each and the same for the rims. so £240... they would do a complete wheel unsplit for £45, but thats not what i wanted so i need to decide in the next few weeks what i am going to do with these wheels...

I may strip the paint off the centres myself and have a go at painting them but i did notice today that the rim centre i was stripping bolts out of today looked in pretty good condition and maybe able to just clean that one and repaint the other ones.. and i going to clean the outers

heres a thing....

so i have removed all the centres and kept them with the matching rims... I thought maybe the centres were all the same but it looks like the rear wheel centres have 8.5j stamped on them and the fronnt 8j on them.. looking on bmwwheels styles website, the rears and fronts have different offsets too et50 rear et47 front..

so would it be possible to run the 8.5j centres on the front rims (225) and the 8j centres on the rear rims (255) ?

The reason i am asking this is, if i decide to fit these wheels as standard on my 1.9 will they fit ?

if not i could swap the centres....

has anyone fitted 18 inch style 108s staggered on a 1.9 ?

was thinking maybe the 8j centres with a lower offset and the wider 255 hub would fit on my rear 1.9 with no spacers....

yeah just so pleased to get these seperated i can take my time now over the winter to get them looking real nice...along with the other stuff needed on this 2.8....just wish i had another garage to keep it in.. as my 1.9 is taking over the main garage...

You can remove the centre section without effecting the tyre, just remove the bolts and knock it out
