Modern electric parking brakes have the "drive off" facility and some are automatically applied too (dependant on settings). I'm lazy tbh and leave mine in park and only give it a hard time around MOT time to make sure it works.

All the same I wouldn't know where to start with this issue if I had to face it needs must if you have ones so good post @Nodzed .
I was at a bit of a loss thb, I have Carly but they haven't added the bit in the e89 maintenance section for the handbrake auto wind back yet "Coming Soon" apparently
So I had changed the front disks and pads but had booked the car into my local Indy for the rears, I hate paying for work that I would normally be more than able to do, luckily @Lee (the font of all knowledge OR just a wizz on Google who knows =))) found the work around for me, I wouldn't of attempted to dismantle the motor normally. All that said there is a lot less on the e89 handbrake system to go wrong or give issues, its a simple replaceable motor and fairly standard self adjusting caliper, I like it, there's no gizmos such as auto on or auto drive off unlike more modern versions. A lot less to service than e85s and Z3s, no cables, shoes, springs, no rotting back-plates b******** up the handbrake no pain in the arse adjustment issues either. Just an observation ;)

Wonder if I could fit it to the Z3 =))

You may, or may not, be surprised how much Google gets used in garages these days.

No doubt.

Just not at BMW dealerships :rage: If it isn't on a scripted procedure triggered by diagnostics they appear to have no discretion. However if the computer says go stick a socket up your ar*e they'll just go do it. Found that out on my 3 Series which was delivered new with a faulty headlamp controller. 2 weeks in the workshop while they blindly did what the diagnostics told them getting nowhere. In the end I asked to speak with the workshop foreman who heorically defended himself before ultimately admitting what I was suggesting as an approach was much more sensible...
