Giedo van der Garde

Giedo van der Garde statement

‘We have reached a settlement with Sauber and my driver contract with the team has been ended by mutual consent. As a passionate race driver, I feel sad and am very disappointed. I have worked very hard my entire career, ever since starting with go-karts at the age of eight, to live my dream and become a successful Formula One driver. I had hoped at last to be able to show what I am capable of, driving a car for a respected midfield team in the 2015 season. This dream has been taken away from me and I know that my future in Formula One is probably over.

I had a valid driver contract for the entire 2015 season and enforceable rights to it. I pushed very hard until last Saturday in Melbourne to get the drive that I was entitled to. This legal process started in 2014 and has taken a great deal of effort. It was never a last minute thing, but it only became public in the last week when we tried to force the team to accept the rulings of a succession of legal authorities and courts.

I am a race driver and all I want is to race. However, the team principal was adamant not to let me drive, notwithstanding my legal rights to do so and a series of rulings and court orders in my favour and despite my race driving abilities. I will never understand this. I could have persisted, but the team principal had taken a decision contrary to my contract that she would not work with me and this became painfully clear in the paddock in Melbourne. To push on against this determination might have brought down the team, it would most certainly have wrecked the opening Grand Prix in Melbourne because the team´s cars would have been seized by the court, it may have ruined the careers of two young drivers Marcus Ericsson and Felipe Nasr. Possibly the team´s directors would even be taken into custody. I decided I did not want to live with that idea, even though it was only the team’s management that was responsible for the bizarre situation I found myself in.

I am very grateful to my fans and many friends in Formula One who have given me a lot of support during the last couple of months. This period has been very difficult for me especially since I could not talk to anybody about the pending proceedings. Last week, many drivers on the grid gave me their support and several of them did so openly in the media as well. The same goes for several leading figures in the paddock who include team bosses and reputable former Formula One drivers. I thank them as well.

My future in motorsport has not finished: on the contrary, I see this as a new beginning. I will sit down with my management in the coming weeks to discuss my future plans. I would love to take part in the WEC and the Le Mans 24 Hours in an LMP1 car. Former Formula One drivers do very well in this series. We also have our eye on other series such as the DTM in 2016 and beyond.

There has been a lot of speculation in the media over the past week, so I want to set out clearly that my sponsors paid the sponsorship fee related to the 2015 season in its entirety to Sauber in the first half of 2014. This was simply in good faith and to help the team deal with its cash problems at the time. Effectively, it was my sponsor’s advanced payments that helped the team survive in 2014.

Sauber’s financial decision-making in this case is bizarre and makes no sense to me. I am not at liberty to discuss details, but Sauber paid significant compensation to avoid honouring the contract they had with me. Only in that respect can I be satisfied that my rights have finally been recognised and that at least some justice has been done.

I want to thank McGregor for sponsoring me from the time I won the Formula Renault 3.5 Ltr. Series in 2008. I hope we can continue to build on this as my motorsport career goes forward in other series.

Finally, I would like to direct a few words to the teams, drivers, future drivers, their managers and the Formula One governing bodies. I sincerely hope that what has happened to me will start a movement aimed at setting new standards and bringing about new regulations to help protect the rights of drivers. I would like to think that the values and business ethics that apply in any other business should be equally applicable in Formula One. I am lucky to have had Marcel and Jeroen on my side. Both of them have extensive backgrounds in business and bring a lot of expertise to the table when it comes to resolving complicated business affairs. Without them, I would have remained empty-handed in the wake of this extraordinary affair. There are numerous examples of talented drivers with good intentions but without the sort of professional support that I have had, who have been broken by Formula One and who have seen their careers destroyed. I therefore hope that my unprecedented case which was heard last week by the Supreme Court of Victoria at Melbourne will serve as an example to illustrate what should change, and that new regulations will be implemented to help protect driver rights.’

BBC F1 Sport.

Van der Garde says F1 dream over as Sauber contract cancelled
Sauber responded by saying their focus is on the next grand prix in Malaysia and hoped the matter was now closed.

The settlement comes after a court in Australia backed Van der Garde's claim he had a valid contract before his dismissal last season.

The dispute between Sauber and Van der Garde, which played out in the Victorian Supreme Court last week, saw the team fail to overturn a ruling the Dutchman should race at the start of the season.

Sauber risked having its assets seized before Van der Garde dropped his legal action, while team principal Monisha Kaltenborn had faced the prospect of being arrested.

How do you sign five drivers for two race seats? Andrew Benson explains...

"Sauber do not come out of the Giedo Van der Garde contract row well, but they ended up in this situation because they are struggling to cope with financial problems.

The Swiss team actually ended up with five drivers contracted for this season - Van der Garde, last year's race drivers, Adrian Sutil and Esteban Gutierrez, and the two current drivers, Felipe Nasr and Marcus Ericsson.

They have not talked publicly about why that was, but the answer seems straightforward. In desperate financial straits, they did what they needed to do at each stage to keep the company on its feet.

Although Sauber have ended up paying Van Der Garde a reputed 15m euros to go away, the team still appear to be up, financially speaking. That's because Nasr and Ericsson brought 40m euros between them - and paid it up front.

Van Der Garde's deal presumably includes a return of the reputed 8m euros he paid the team last summer to seal his deal.

It's not hard to see why Sauber wanted rid of Sutil and Gutierrez. Last year was Sauber's worst ever, but they still could have scored points if the two drivers had not spun away their chances each time they came up.

Gutierrez is now Ferrari's reserve driver. Sutil, though, is still in the wings, waiting for his own chance to claim compensation. This story is not over yet."

Formula 1: Hockenheim boss rules out 2015 German Grand Prix
There will be no German Grand Prix this year, the boss of the Hockenheim circuit has told a German newspaper.

The track hosted the 2014 race but is supposed to alternate each year with the Nurburgring.

However, the Nurburgring has new owners and no contract for 2015.

Hockenheim boss Georg Seiler told Bild they could not be ready in time for the July 17-19 race, adding: "We have no hope any more of having a Formula One race here."

Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone said in January that Hockenheim would host this year's German Grand Prix as the only alternative to the Nurburgring.

The official 2015 calendar does not yet specify a venue for the race.

Renault has left Daniel Ricciardo's Red Bull trailing WAY behind Formula One's dominant Mercedes outfit.

Now, the engine manufacturer has delivered terrible news.

RENAULT believes it is unlikely that they will be able to supply Red Bull with an engine capable of winning a Formula 1 race in 2015.

The French engine manufacturer has been under fire over its troubled start to the new season despite conducting an “aggressive” development program over the European winter.

Renault claimed pre-season that it had halved Mercedes’ power advantage, but Red Bull estimates the Renault V6 was around 100 horsepower down on their chief rival at Albert Park.

Both Daniel Ricciardo and Toro Rosso’s Max Verstappen suffered engine failures over the Australian Grand Prix weekend, while all four of the teams’ drivers complained of poor driveability.

Hamilton rubbished rumours that he wanted £1m a week, sources today say he will be on £40m a year. So that's only £800,000 a week then.

Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone says the sport is 'sick', and has criticised the teams for being too egoistic.

Ecclestone also reckons the current complex technical rules are a big part of the reason why television audiences are declining.

"Sick for a start," said Ecclestone when asked what diagnosis would he make of Formula 1.

"We have lost audience and I want to know why. There are so many options people have these days for entertainment.

The F1 boss insists Formula 1 has become too complicated for the average fan.

"And many times commentators hide behind technical terms because they themselves don't fully understand what is going on. There you have it."

Ecclestone was also critical of the teams for not allowing change to happen, saying all they do is think about themselves.

"The teams are egoistic. They do nothing for the sport, only for themselves. They only do what is good for them.

"It is frustrating to see that they just think about the present and have no visions for the future. I think there are people in the paddock who don't think beyond the next race.

Tighter than it might have been

Although Lewis Hamilton looked mighty today, it's worth noting that he was unable to improve on his final lap, allowing team-mate Nico Rosberg to close to within 0.04secs on his last flyer.

"Oh come on, guys," was Rosberg's response when told of the gap over the team radio.

Still, it was enough for the reigning champion to earn his 41st career pole position.

Stick a cork in it, Lewis! Ungallant F1 ace Hamilton sprays hostess in the face with champagne after winning Chinese Grand Prix

  • He celebrated with 'trademark' move of spraying champagne in the face of the hostess - much to her surprise

Lewis Hamilton is creating a bit of a track record for himself - and this one isn't on the starting grid.
Celebrating his win at the Chinese Grand Prix on Sunday, he sprayed champagne straight into the face of one of the hostesses.
But the unimpressed grid girl should have perhaps anticipated the soaking as it is not the first time the racing icon has whipped out his victory move.

Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone says Monza "must pay" if it wants to secure the future of the Italian Grand Prix. Ecclestone has cast doubt over the future of the race several times in the past, saying the financial conditions of the current contract are not good enough.

Meanwhile, Ecclestone has renewed calls for a return to V8 engines, claiming it is "urgently" needed and that they could be boosted to 1000bhp.

Being an F1 driver doesn't stop Jenson Button from getting excited when he spies a nice road car, as this tweet from yesterday evening in Bahrain shows.

Hamilton, meanwhile, has said he was just trying to show the fun side of F1 when he sprayed champagne in Liu's face.
