Did your car have the fitting brackets already fitted or did you fit them? I fitted the brackets myself and don't remeber any 'caps'

I installed them myself, but the caps I am talking about are on the hardtop not on the brackets.
they cover the mechanism that locks the hardtop in the rear.
i understand that from these you adjust how log it sits on the car.

the frustration…
still trying to make the bloody top fit.
tried another hardtop that a friend bought, and it fits like a glove.
my hardtop on his car has a gap at the front…
why is everything so complicated and difficult?
cant it just fit with one try like the one I had on my E46?

…. Pfffff…..
there goes another lost Saturday tomorrow….

Loosen ALL the fitting screws at the windscreen, don't take them out, leave them loose in the holes. The front fitting brackets should be easy to move now. I think there are 4 or possibly 6 each side, besides the two main ones that secures to the windscreen

Undo the "behind the seat" fittings.

Now line up the hard top so that it fits flush at the windscreen and ensure it sits central on the car.

Now tighten the front screws making sure that the hardtop doesn't move in the process.

Once you are happy that the front is sitting nice and flush, fasten the rear fittings.

The front fittings must be secured first.

So…
The issue was that the hardtop just refused to align in height.
Put it on, many times, tried whatever trick, and finally after many hours comparing it to the other one we had available, discovered that the rubber seal on the bottom was not the original one but a random “do everything-fit all” one that not only could not be compressed but was also 3 cm thicker than the correct one.

discussed it a lot, and finally decided to fit the black top that fits and my friend will get my silver one as it is the correct colour for his car and just change the rubbers.
My car is titanium silver and the the top I had was a grey-ish lookalike but not exact match.
his is a dark grey car and my top looks better on it.
So here I am with a black top… that fits… (better)
case closed.
Also had the opportunity to see a strange E39 with an E46 S54 engine, one of the weirdest transplants ever…

I'm hoping to sell my Z3M and so I have a hard top stand I don't need anymore. If anyone wants it (I'm in Dartford) just PM here please.
