Hi guys,
ShortieGal yes it hapoens whilst driving as well, sounds like the same problem as mine!

Code reader was a complete waste of money (probably my fault for getting a cheap one).

I'm currently torn between, just buying a crank and cam sensor (take the gamble) or taking it to a BMW garage, but worried about how much the garage will cost, any ideas?

And if I am buying cam/crank sensors what price range should I go for (maybe not as cheap as that code reader I bought haha)

Also yes I Have have done everything else people have suggested, throttle body completely stripped and cleaned, all rubbers and boots checked thoroughly. Everything around that area is exceptionally pristine now, it has to be some electrical component I'm thinking...

Once again thanks a lot for the help guys! I will keep you posted, car is fully going back on the road 2nd July when I get back from holiday so hopefully I will have sorted it!

the code reader should pick up any sensor fault, so dont go buying sensors unless they are showing fault.... you could see if anyone local can read the codes just to make sure your code reader is not working... most good diy mechanics would have one in their toolbox... i use a elm327 bluetooth, and a usb elm327 with the free software and that works for me....

I would let BMW or a BMW specialist scan the codes and see what they come up with. It's happened to me where different codes show depending how good your reader is. At least that way you will know for sure and make sure they do not progress any further until they have contacted you. That way you will only be charged for the codes being read.

You can then choose how to proceed yourself.

I spoke too soon!!! Even more bad news, after my faultless drive the other day the car has now decided it's old problem of stalling randomly has now become constant (after about 10 mins of driving it concs out splutters and you cannot rev the engine at all) just keeps on stalling and stalling.

I've uploaded a video, anyone experienced this kind of behaviour before??

My experience is that the camshaft sensor caused intermittent issues such as rough running, lack of power, occasional backfire but never full engine failure/stall.
The crankshaft sensor caused cut out, sometimes inability to restart.
Health warning, above not scientific, just my experience. Bearing in mind the location of these sensors/plugs (heat etc) failure is not surprising after 20 years or so service.
2nd health warning, only replace with OEM.:)

Video is currently uploading, this issue comes off the back of replacing the CAM sensor ran fine for a day then started cutting stalling and for the first time backfiring, smoking heavy too, oil gathered on the exhaust (which it has never ever done before)

Anyone know any good BMW garages near leeds? The closer the better, as i have about 10mins (if that... of clear driving before the car will not drive for about two hours)

How much and what make was the cam sensor you fitted please?

Tony.

ps. My money will be on inlet camshaft position sensor. My Z3 2.0 acted just like that when it packed up.

Hi Tony,
It was £38, i specifically asked for the best quality one they could order. Is the inlet sensor different to the cam sensor?

Cheers

Hi,there is a sensor for both camshafts, inlet and exhaust. I too fitted one at that price and it did last a bit longer than 1 day but I have heard of cheap ones not even working when first fitted. Which engine does your car have? ECP do an OEM quality one which, in the case of mine, was a Bosch one with the Bosch logo ground off but the part number was still there and when Googled found the original Bosch part. This cost around £60. Always ask for OEM QUALITY parts.
This was the cheap part which failed soon after fitting,

Meanwhile this is the OEM Quality (Bosch) one I replaced it with, which was still in the car when I sold it 1 1/2 years ago and I still see the man who bought the car and it's still going strong.

You can see where the logo was ground off but still see the part number. Try Googling it and see what it brings up.

Tony.

Recently replaced my cam sensor on the 1.9 with BMW part (12141743072) for £98.36; you also need a new O ring (12141748398) @ 99p.

Cheaper parts, even if said to be OEM quality, are a false economy IMO. The one I replaced had lasted for 20 years!:)

Who makes the original BMW part?

Hi guys sorry for inactivity I have been on holiday!

So the current situation is,
Replaced : Idle value, inlet cam sensor.

Currently the car will start up perfect, run perfect for 10 mins but soon as the car gets warm it will splutter conc and cough out, and not rev - completely undriveble.

As I can't drive it to get the codes read I want to take one more gamble, the exhaust cam sensor. Can someone tel me what the Part is called please?

*since replacing these new parts the car has got 10x worse*

Thanks again rob!

As above, if you have replaced the camshaft sensor and all the associated hoses etc are sound, I would be replacing the crankshaft sensor.

Hi thanks for advice I think I will try that, this morning I just took out the exhaust cam sensor and replaced (even though old unit looked very new). I also whipped out the fuel filter and ran a test (all fine).

I think if a crank sensor doesn't work then I will just trailer it to the nearest BMW specialist - if anyone can advise of one near Leeds that would be great!

Cheers
