Recently got my e36 z3 back from the shop and discovered that the most likely the previous owner has swapped engines on the car, as the engine mounting shoulder part number 22 11 1 094 652 is from an e46 rather than the correct shoulder 11 81 1 137 014 from an e36 which meant that the whole engine was not properly placed, my question is : How can I check and see if they have also swapped the ECU or does my car still have the old ECU from the e36 engine???

Pull the ECU and look at it, It's likely got an EWS delete showing they wanted to do a quick swap.

Slide out the ECU and take a picture of it.

Normally it will be plain with one sticker that has the same Vin number of your car. Or it might have a company sticker that made the ECU map.

Not a huge issue, I built my zed the same way. That way I got to pick and choose all the best bits :)

My car should have an EWSII I’m hoping that if they swapped the engine they were bright enough to swap to EWSIII and I’m hoping the put it under the stirring clolumm

Unfortunately my z3 is 1,9 and doesn’t have much punch..... if you have any tips for upgrades I’d love to hear. I intend on dropping in a 2,5 hopefully after summer

The ECU has the EWS system protocol removed so It won't look for the Module. That allows you to keep the same key set if you change the engine.

They're normally a coded package together "keys, Barrels, EWS Module, ECU"

The ECU is the DME module in the back left of the engine compartment as you stand at the front.

The EWS is the immobiliser. Every Z3 I’ve seen has an EWS 3D. Maybe the earliest cars had EWS 2 but I thought not. It lives under the steering column.

Not really sure what the issue is with the engine swap? As long as it’s M54 for M54 etc, the CC is the same and all the existing inlet system was kept why would it need a different DME?

And even if it isn’t like for like are there actually any issues apparent?

You won't know till you've looked at the ECU, we can only but guess here.

Not any tragic issues I feel the car is lacking power.
Wouldn’t cause issues if the engine is from an
E46 instead of an e36 even if is has the same cc’s?

Thanks
But when you made the swap how did you sit the engine? When my car was wearing the wrong shoulders it was sitting almost 2 cm further back than it should have been thus straining the transmission and all silent blocks engine and transmission had to change them with the new shoulders

I moved my engine mounts over from the engine. I'm struggling to see how they are the wrong mounts, the prop wont line up with the gearbox in length if it was that far out.
