The Z3 was making some unusual noises, possibly coming from the intake, and the fuel trims were also looking a little out so I decided to run a smoke test to see if I had a problem. Seems like I do…

It came off easily enough:

Now I have a winter project to fill the cold, dark nights.

There are plenty of videos online that show terrible ham-fisted repairs - perfect for me.
If I can get it apart without the 30 year old plastic pinging into shrapnel then I’ll attempt to replace the diaphragms. If not, I’ll be looking for a replacement.
Any advice or words of encouragement would be most welcome.

Gotta be easier just to bolt on a refurb’d unit..I contemplated a rebuild on the one on my M43 but common sense prevailed

Definitely easier but if I can do it myself then I’d feel happier than having someone else screwing around with this part. It may be that I make as bad a job as seen in some of the YouTube videos, in which case I may go for a used working part or, worst case, a refurbed unit.

So far, so good …IMG_6960.jpeg

Did you find a source for the replacement diaphragms ? That’s what stopped me in the end..could only find one of them

No, I haven’t found a good source for the parts yet. There are parts available online but with no information available about the materials. When I’m back in the office I’ll speak to a materials specialist and see if our regular supply chain can come up with anything. It’s in a harsh environment and a parts failure could possibly end very badly.

I found on the 3 Disa i rebuild i found the larger Clear/white diaphragm was ok it was always the orange/ red one that was damaged.
On rebuild i put grease in the hinges for flap which also seemed to help
Yes i had same problem the diaphragms if i remember ones i got came from Usa
Had to buy pack of 3 ( but luckily i had 3 disa to rebuild) the 2 that are still in thier respective vehicles still ok since repair.

Good to know.
I’m also having some thoughts on how to test these units. It seems quite tricky to test properly but I have an idea…
