I might have to buy it.

It would be looked after and pampered daily!

I just found that the price of Z3 M in year 2001 was $132,000 in Australia. The Z3 1.9 was $65,000. The price in late 1998 would have been the same or more, not less. The UK prices are generally low due to reduced taxes. So it's value has halved in 17 years. Will the car appreciate in the next 10-20 years?

Here is another view point. The question for me would be why buy it? You cannot drive it or else the value will plummet. To store it will cost considerable money since, like everything, parts will still degrade and routine maintenance will be required. If I am not mistaken the cost new in Australia would have been well in excess of $100,000, so the original owner will have lost money. Apart from looking at it you are probably banking that it will now appreciate in value. Unless you are a compulsive collector I personally cannot understand why somebody would buy an M roadster and then not drive it. I certainly could not resist the temptation. Still that's my view but I appreciate we are all different.

Just after I posted my comments I notice you posted this. Hey two like minds separated by 10000 miles. I don't know the Aussie market but in the UK to make money out of old cars they must either be very rare, have a race herritage or some for of celebrity endorsement. Most ZMs are running at about a third of their new value. I believe they will continue to rise but I think when you take the cost of storage and preventive maintenance into consideration, in my oppinion, you won't make much.

Totally agree @Tilly! Plus you missed out on the pleasure of having driven it all those years it sat around. Unless you have a very low production number make and model I can't see a lot of cars being worth placing in storage as an investment and actually making any money in the end. Plus the pendulum is always swinging as to what will sell for big bucks and what won't as the market constantly changes as the game goes on. Drive it, maintain it and keep it clean and above all enjoy it which is likely why you bought it for in the first place! JIM

I have given some thought to this and I fully agree with Tilly and Jim. The effort required to look after a stored car and the cost of maintenance may not pay back at the end. It is unlikely that the value of Z3 M will appreciate much in the next few years. I would rather buy a usable car and invest the balance money in a venture that would give a good return. The Aussie market for European classic cars is generally low as the demand here is for the classic Australian/ American cars with a racing history. Many thanks for the responses.
