You can still Insure against fire and theft Mike. I think the connection is between insurance road risk and road tax where by you can't have one without the other, which was highlighted when sorning came in. I'm sure someone may correct me but that's how I remember it.

The guy over here is taking his car off the road for the winter period (like you do) and he has been doing it for years with no problem, stopping the road tax etc but the insurance company is now telling him 'all or nothing'
I will have to check this out as I am still paying full whack for my car and it is off the road.

I may be wrong and be happily corrected but I thought even if you have SORN your vehicle it still has to be insured, I suppose if its parked on the public highway it needs insurance. If its off road then I cannot see why an attempt to claim back the tax would be worthwhile. For me the insurance was cheaper for the whole year via web search engine than going to a specialist and getting quotes for 6 months.

I thought it was just the opposite, in that you can't insure a sorned vehicle for road risk. I just got the cheapest quote I could for my car and paid direct debit (monthly) much like you can now for road tax? You can't sorn a car and keep it parked on public roads.

A sorned car has to be kept off highway, but does not need to be insured, a car kept off highway but not sorned needs to be insured or you will be fined.

There you go Tony as I said I have no real idea of how it works, I was like you paid the cheapest insurance quote which worked out cheaper over the 12months rather than 6 and had every intention to SORN. What happens if you have no where to store the car off road when you SORN??

I'm sure some bright spark amongst us will soon put us right!!

Thanks for that Rich, I couldn't quite remember how it worked apart from sorned means off the road ie Stautory Off Road Notification.:)

I SORN'd 31st October. Very simple on line and now waiting for DVLA to issue 5 months tax refund. Each insurance company seems to have there own rules. I have a limited mileage (5000) classic policy and when I queried changing from fully comp to a more basic cover it was explained that the cost was assessed on mileage not time based so no refund.

Welcome along.

I'm a big fan of the North East. It's a lovely part of the country.

You're right though... Don't see many sun tans!

:)

Hi Zed people. Just joined after having my shiny silver Z 3 3.0 litre sport for five years. Still love cruising along listening to that nice deep throaty burble, which is just as well as the radio sucks :)
Welcome Mal from the other side of the pond. Nice looking car. Love the wheels and a nice plate no. Frankie
