Hi rlane: Thanks for message. I am about to put in a new Message asking for 'help' as have run into a couple of problems!! Life instead of looking forward to using the car - which will be taxed and Insured from the 1st Aug - means I am tearing my hair out over the fact that when my wife operated the electric drivers seat all the way forward she manage to jam it solid!! I am too long-legged to be able to sit in it at the moment and am frantically trying to work through all the literature about seat adjustment/faults to be able to free it up again. I can get to the two rear 16m bolts, but so far cannot work out how to remove the two front fixings so that I can get under to the motor shaft to try to 'unwind' it! Infuriating, eh?.
Second issue is that the separate Immobilisor Fob came with a flat battery, so I reckoned the Owner was just being incorrect when he said it didn't work so. I put a new battery in yesterday and although the red light on it lights up, nothing happens with the car alarm side of it all!
There is a small 'key' with the Fob, but so far cannot see where it should fit - might that turn the alarm Off/On???
What a game, eh? Richard (Methwold - West Norfolk - 1998 1.9 Version)

If you look at the alarm "sounder" under the bonnet you'll see where that key goes to turn the sounder off. Re the seat. Get a small hammer and operate the switch whilst tapping what you can reach of the seat motor/mechanism.

If you have your documents you should have a yellow envelope with a card in with a security code. In the alarm manual it tells you how to input the code via the ignition switch but if you don’t have those you will have to follow the guide which in short involves taking the glove box out to get acces to the alarm module and flicking a switch then use your fob buttons to link to the module

Hi Althulas. Thanks for message. Sadly no paperwork with the car and only one ignition key (so need to get another - expensive - of those too!) I have read about how to access the electrics under the glovebox, and may have to expore that soon.
Meanwhile I have managed to 'unjam' the Driver seat (a major problem as I couldn't fit into the car!!!) and am now trying to work out what happened to completely Flatten the battery (only two weeks old) yesterday which I fear might have been caused by some sort of 'short' when I was playing around with the underbonnet immobilisor 'key' (?). I had not touched anything else electrical on the car, apart from unjamming the seat (without actually touching any of the electrics under there though - just used a mallet on the motor!).
Put it on charge over night and the car started OK this morning (as did the seat ), so now scratching head and muttering 'what the hell'????
Ah the joys of old cars, eh?

A jammed seat motor will drain a battery fairly quick.

Hi and welcome from me in Scotland. :welcome:
Re the flat battery .
Does your zed have an original radio or aftermarket unit?

There has been numerous cases of aftermarket radios fitted and they don't wire in ( or were not wired in ) correctly causing a parasitic drain on the battery.

Hi Tony,. Nothing like brute force and ignorance, eh?! The mallet worked at treat, so will be careful with the seat in future.

Found the right spot for the key - nothing seems to happen, but - always a BUT - when I went back to the car to play with the radio last evening I found the whole darn car was 'dead' Nothing alive at all - even the boot festoon bulb- so charged it over last night and this morning it all works ok. Now will be checking it frequently to see if it flattens again. I had not touched anything else at all regarding the cars wiring, etc,,
Oh Boy, old cars!
Richard ( PS: Am I right in thinking that the Alarm key just turns Off the horn, but otherwise does'nt affect the Immobilisor itself at all?
Second question! - do you reckon it's worth buying one of the Haynes BMW 3-Series 1991-1999 Manuals, which look to cover the 1.9 engine, but might items like the brakes, or?, also be relevant to a Z3?)

That's another issue forgot to say about flat battery turn your video on on your phone put it in boot shut it and make sure the boot light goes off with the boot shut .
Boot switches can be problematic and lead to the light staying on killing the battery.

Hi Stephen,
The one in the car now is a Kenwood KDC 5024 , CD and Radio. No idea what the original might have been. Take your point about parasitic drain, but whatever happened to this car was abrupt and dramatic to flatten it so fast and so totally. I don't start driving in around the County until next Tuesday when the Insurance and Tax kicks in, so am now torn between looking forward to it but worry over whether something might go wrong electrically when I do get out! The previous Owner had it for 13 years, and did change quite a few important things, so it 'should' be fine for plenty of miles yet. We shall see.
Have you ever looked at any of the Haynes Manuals which cover the BMW 3-Series car, as I see that one Issue does cover the 1.9 engine? Whether it covers other items common to the Z3 is something that might make one worth buying?

Electrics wise on the whole zed 3 is usually pretty good

Haynes manual wise.
There are 2 e36 Haynes manual one also covers the zed 3 will post screen shot once i get back home in an hour or so .
It list repair for e36 then separate section ( with pictures) for anything that's different on z3.
Full Wiring diagrams are available on the forum for pre and face-lift models.

Hi Ian & Sue, Thanks for the message and wish I was back up there in Yorkshire! Love the countryside and have good memories of trips up that way (although last trip my wife ended up in Scarborough Hospital for a night!).
Plan to get back again early next year when the NYMR will be running in Spring - expensive but great railway journey. It will be somewhere to use the car for too!
Richard
