I do various roles at the moment, mainly I'm the Information Security Manager for a software development company but I'm also the IT Manager. Some of that is changing due to the company being sold, but generally I make sure that the data we hold as a business, and on behalf of our customers is secure. Actually happy to lose the IT side of my job, been doing that since leaving school back in 1988 and the InfoSec stuff is much more interesting.

Also run this place, not so much an occupation as a punishment

Started in electrical engineering on old electro-mechanical telephone exchanges (British), building the first digital ones (French) in Johannesburg, South Africa. Moved into industry and then management, didn't like that, so became an Engineering Loss Adjuster. Established my own Company, got held up at gun-point one Sunday morning on the 11th green. Didn't like that, so moved back to the UK to a life of salaried employee and poverty. Didn't like that (the last bit), so have now spent some years working in the Middle East (Saudi, Qatar, Dubai, Bahrain). Boss had issues with Company licenses so now back home atm. Wondering whether to head back for a last bite of the apple, try something less stressful for a while, or just stop working altogether.

Enjoyed every minute. Except for the staring down the barrel of a 9mm Berreta bit.

I was at awe aldermaston for a year, canny place.

I became a tattoo artist many years ago, fell out of love with it about 4 years back. I still do a few a year, choice pieces if it's something I'm interested in but nothing massive anymore.

Now I do decommissioning works at sites like awe. I've just returned from a few months on a rig in shetland.
A great place to work and live but out of the blue an option to live and work in Cumbria came up 🚀 The Shelands, now there's a place, stunning. Posted to RAF Saxa Vord on Unst in 1999, loved it.

Traveled around the world fixing ship engines. Then lived in the Carbbean working for one of the power companies. Then moved to the UK where I manage ships.
I can think of worse places to live and work :wideyed:

Been in the construction industry for 36 years bricklayer for the last 30 had a break in the middle for 5 years as site manager
i was in civil engineering for around 45 years. Finished as director of a Tunnelling Company. As against talking about what we did — how about how we are going in the future. When I gave I was finding it a lot easier to get 20 graduates than one good tradesman. I found myself doing pub crawls to find people who could DO a job as against having a bit of paper to say they could supervise others who could carry out the work Sorry if a bit off subject

Hi always find it fascinating how people from so many diverse backgrounds are united by one common intrest
I started in 1981 at 16 years old as an apprentice electrician at Vickers shipyard Barrow in furness at the end of my apprenticeship I was employed to do electrical / instrumentation testing and commissioning on board submarines and surface ships and at one point was based at Campletown on the end of the Mull Of KIntyre
At 24 i joined North west water/ Unitied Utilities as mobile electrical/instrumentation engineer covering primary south cumbria lake district but could end up any were in the north west and southern scotland , i have been doing the same job for 33 years and looking forward to retirement at 60

I also own a Dosmestic Appliance repair company which has been trading for in excess of 30 years which my wife calls a very profitable hobby were i have maintence and repair contracts for the majority of the letting companies in south cumbria and several insurance companies

It’s an important issue going forwards for those of us who love to watch work. Industry itself is the problem. There is little or no investment in on-the-job training during courses. As a consequence students have little or no concept of how the real world works and things get done. They have zero practical experience or people skills either as workers or supervisors. Yet industry complains bitterly that colleges and universities don’t give them the right materials. For small companies it’s even worse. They don’t have the financial resources or investment in order to employ apprentices. It’s all cock-eyed if you ask me.
