Before I place my tribute order I would really like to see a 507 kit in the flesh, doesn't need to be completed, is anyone near to Reading, Berkshire?

Not cheap but the yellow one is very nicely presented.
Blue one looks good as well.
Looks as if they've been built to sell- not diy projects.

If I’m being picky (which I am) have you looked closely at the seat stitching? It wobbles all over the place. Other parts are cleverly built, and put together.
I am sure they were built just to sell onwards too.

Yes you are !!! I'd give them the benefit of doubt around the side bolsters (camera angle?) but the most visible areas over the tops deffo show that.

Does that give them an artisan-build caché or have you spoilt them for me?

Whilst I hope they achieve their asking price, I could probably sell mine for less and still be happy with the upside.
I won’t mention the other things that niggle me because once seen, you won’t unsee them, like silver painted bumpers and grilles.

That's why I would struggle to live with a kit car that was built by someone else.

Faults in a mass-produced car (and there are very few nowadays) are just put down to "it is what it is".

A kit car was built by one person, and they are solely to blame for every fault. BTW, I'm cursing this person on a daily basis - especially for the electrical gremlins .

bumpers. (Paint/wrap?)
Grills. Paint/wrap grill surrounds and fit the grill mesh
Wheels. Get some.
Mirrors. Still using old z3 mirrors. Keep my eye open for some bigger-than-usual chrome jobbies.
Paint. Haven't decided what color yet.
Interior. Gonna keep most of the z3 interior.. I have a wooden z3 wheel. Might do the interior in a year or two.
Softtop. I have a new burgundy softtop to fit. Just a cheap one for now.
Lots of other stuff to keep me busy busy

But it doesn't last more than a couple of years before it starts to yellow and peel.

Panel gaps around the car were actually pretty good.

Except for the doors. Which are terrible

Cut away the gelcoat to expose the fibres and rough up the edges to give the new grp something to bond to.

Clag it in there

I had to move the swage line but I did that a couple weeks ago. Previous page.

The gap is now around 5 or 6mm so still pretty big but at least the front shell is straight now. The leading edge of the door isn't straight so that'll need a mm too. But also the way the z3 hinges work with the wider doors means the door swings forwards when opening and makes contact with the rear edge of the front wing so a biggish gap is necessary. Maybe 5 or 6mm is as close as I can get it.

Are you going to add location pins to the bonnet to pull in the bottom edge? Thanks for the tip about the door moving forward as it opens, this is the type of detail that makes these updates so useful.

If the front body shell was just a single sheet of grp it would be quite wobbly and locating pins would work. But it is very strong. Multiple sheets of grp. It really is rigid and pins wouldn't pull it in.

I showed how I fixed it a few posts ago.

The reason the used to go yellow was the clear coat used to be applied clear.
now they use a drop of blue tint that’s unnoticeable and it has apparently stopped the discolouring from Occurring.
time will tell, but at the moment all is good.

It's not just the yellowing though, the clear coat gets damaged with stone chips and once moisture gets in the coating begins to tarnish and break down. Not really suitable for exterior use where it's exposed to the weather. This was the result after 3 years on my radiator surround and windscreen trim. The hydro-chromed components on the inside of the car were still ok after 6 years.

Another idea I'm toying with is to cut it across here just below the swage line

and bolt the bottom part to the metalwork just like the Z3.

The wiring for the turn signal is there by the A pillar. Also, lifting the front will be nicer on the wheelarch liner without that panel swinging forward. Also be able to have that panel perfectly aligned with the door panel and sill.

Won't be an easy cut because the panel is double skinned and the bonnet hinges are roughly inline with where I want to cut.

Need to think about this one but I do like the idea. Watch this space.

Which is why I'm thinking of doing vinyl wrap on the bumpers?

I had wrap last year but it didn’t reflect very well. It’s been ok on the windscreen frame though.
also due to the bumper shape, most people wrap it in three sections and have a join, which I didn’t want.
Time will tell regarding discolouring of the hydrochrome, and it has many thick coats of clear so hopefully it won’t chip easily. Or get scuffed on a wall
