Check your brake pads and wear sensors.

The handbrake light has the P in the centre see photo below.
The circle with the dotted outer is brake pad wear.
The one with the exclamation is hydraulics - if the level looks good suggest you take the filler cap off reservoir and exercise the float and check if light goes out .

i have checked the fluid, will try pumping it with the cap off, just took it for a spin - exclamation mark red light flickers under braking, then when stationery it would flicker if i pump the pedal, the second time i was at a standstill i tried it again - now the wear sensor is flickering but no exclamation mark warning light. will have to wait till i get home and plug it in.

I'm puzzled now - reason I said check fluid float switch was because mine stuck a few years ago. My level was actually low but no warning - exercised float which had stuck and has been Ok since but I always check it as a routine.
Just had a look in the handbook which has only basic info but does make reference to dual braking systems and combination of low level, excessive pedal travel and light on can indicate one system is failing.
As you say plug it into diagnostics and see if that tells you anything.

well a slight update, no need for diagnostics, the exclamation light has gone out and is now replaced by the brake wear sensor light (not sure why the hydraulics light came on first) thanks for all the reply's guys:thumbsup:

That'd be why your friendly M.O.T. Tester advised your pads were low then, which also leads to longer pedal travel, something you as a regular driver would hardly ever notice increasing.

Hope new pads sort the problem - would be interesting to see what codes the diagnostics threw up.

That can be a bag of rats Jason, depending on the condition of the back plates. Good luck mate.

Could be mate, after you get the callipers off remember to de-adjust the parking brake shoes before removing the discs though.

I did a "How to" for handbrake cables Jason, pretty much the same job, might worth a look.
