Been a few years since I've upgraded my Sat Nav, what are people using these days? Currently have a Garmin Nuvi which was the top model at the time, but it's incredibly frustrating. Particularly annoying is it's need to reboot randomly.

Is the current range of Garmin units any good (preferably in the not rebooting all the time department), or should I head back to a TomTom?

Any particular models worth looking at?

If it is just a Satnav then i would say Tomtom. If however you want to load Itn route files then it will have to be a Garmin as Tomtom do not do ones that you can preload with routes

sorry i have only used my old tomtom, personally i think most satnavs could be better, there not that quick, and my map is about 6 years old, but i begrudge paying £40 for something i can get for free on my phone. i think tomtom are ripping people off as its not them who are updating the maps, its the users who are updating them. why doesnt google do one, now that would be great.

Most if not all new Satnavs come with lifetime Map upgrade now so no more yearly fees apart from traffic and camera upgrading

A lot of people have complained to Tomtom regarding the issue of route planning but they have stated they will not be including it on any future models as they have used the space to have other useless options

i did notice that tomtom offer a pay quarterly option, so could i not sign up, download the latest map then cancel my subscription? or is it like a phone contract?

I would keep my Garmin but not because it is better than my XL but because all the features such as cameras and all other updates are free. I think Tomtom is the best Map Navigation System but to me and because of driving in Europe i need a proper route navigation device other wise i would miss some of the great roads i would want to go on.
I preload all my routes before leaving England and it has never failed me, i have had a few hickups but always done the routes i have wanted to do

I have also upgraded to my route app. I have Vip status and think it is a lot better than Tyre, the only downside i feel is that it is web based and not a program you can load onto your laptop

I have a Mio Spirit V575, it's 4 years old and came with free lifetime map upgrades but I have to pay for the speed camera update, this year was around £13. I couldn't tell you if it's able to upload routes to it or not.

Tony.

I am a gold member, it has a good start, they are still working on it
I asked them for the option to load more routes in one screen.
They are working to launch more things in the future
