The cash was getting too hot, I have just been out to a local place that specialise in audio and been fixed up with 4 x FUs made by Vibe, I might also add an under seat sub and amp, the guy gave me a demo and it sounded cracking, also got a great deal on them.

What did you get? Front components with the tweeters? What about the rear. Don't think I'll be doing mine any time soon as I'm chuffed with the improvement with the mex stereo and have a few things to do first

Took advice from the guy and went for all coaxial, he said the original tweeter will still operate, but in a different way, he did explain but it went over my head, he was a top guy and didn't push at all, in fact I wanted to spend more but he said it would be wasted, especially in a roadster with the roof down,
I got 2 slim line for the rear

Aw well it's good when people give good advice and don't just take your money!!
The four speakers are 120w each max, as the MEX only kicks out 55w per speaker they will more then handle it so he said.

What about base? That's all that's missing I think. I don't have a sub
He said I should see a big difference with the new speakers as the original ones will more then likely only be 20w, if not I can add a combination sub and amp that fits under the seat, that way you only use the speakers for the top end so can really vamp it up

Hi David, sorry I didn't see your post before fitting them, I got home from work and fitted the fronts, I have taken a few pics and will upload them later as I have to go out and get some beer, The sound is just amazing, I'm like a kid with a new toy and I still have the rears to fit however I think I have bit off more then I can chew as I got 13cm and I recon thats just too big,

Sean, not a problem - I think upgrading / improving a modern classic / classic car as opposed to a more recent car, is much more exciting and rewarding, so I understand your joy, and I guess others do too! Would you provide a summary and costs of this upgrade - I find it very interesting, as with other sound system upgrades done by members of this forum. This is something that is on my agenda over the winter months, all being well.

Ok, so I have my beer in hand and I'll give it a go,
I did the drivers side front first, removed the bonnet release handle, just one screw and it pulls off, underneath it you will see a clip that need turning 90 degrees, this is all that is holding the kick panel in place, the rest is just interference apart from a locating peg at the bottom, basically just jiggle it out,
there are 4 x 8mm head screws that hold the speaker in place, remove and take out the speaker which is connected to the wire with 2 spade ends, the new speaker just went straight in,
You can tell that this is going to sound better just by looking at it :D

Here it is fitted
speaker4.jpg

I gave it a quick test then refitted the kick panel.
Next was the passenger front, just one clip that again needs turning 90 degrees with a flat screw driver,
I removed the 4 screws and got a bit of a shock when this lot came out,
speaker2.jpg

I assume its something to do with the fact that the speakers are cross over and it controls the tweeters,
there is a single screw in the back that holds the speaker to the case, remove and give the speaker a twist as its also held on with double sided tape
speaker1.jpg

New speaker connected, I also fixed it back onto the case with double sided tape.
New speaker connected

Put it all back together and thoroughly enjoyed a 30 mile blast
Cost so far is
Sony MEX 4100 £50 of ebay
2X 13 cm Fli Underground Speakers £20
So for £70 there is a massive improvement and to be honest it is plenty good enough for me, however now I have started I am going to continue and fit the rear speakers, cost £30 as they are slim line, I will also add an under seat combined sub/amp cost £120,
Total cost for upgrade will be £220

Cheap as you like those front speakers. Do you have a deeper base now with just those fitted?

A lot more bass but not really enough as the top end sounds bloody amazing, I fitted the rears today, there was a change of plan but I'll put it on later, I will be getting the sub/amp next week

I was going to butcher the rear plastic so I could fit 5.25s but once I took a look its very tight and I just didn't have it in me. so back to the shop and swapped them for 4" Vibes,
The rear speakers where soldered so followed suit and did the same to the new ones
sp6.jpg

And back in place, however the cone stands proud so need to fit the covers that come with them, you may notice that it upside down, this is due to space, the connection spades where hitting the steel frame as it angled upwards so this was the easy option.
sp8.jpg

Next was the original covers needed to be modified, first the gauze cover was removed to reveal a plastic support frame, this also needed removing,
sp5.jpg

4 holes needed to be drilled to accommodate the new cover, it was screwed to the cover using speed clips to secure it, the screws need to be cut as there is very little room when refitting the entire cover back to the car, I also added some loctite,
sp.jpg

Did the same on the other side and put it all back together, tested it and the drivers side didn't work
sp2.jpg

Put a meter on the cable and no power, so the roll hoops had to come off and whole lot of plastic had to be removed
sp9.jpg

Heres the offending item, I had pulled the cable to give me a bit more to work with and had separated the multi plug
sp1.jpg

So thats it, put it all back together and gave myself a headache on the way home
