onto the next niggle, the Gear change on my car is sticky, the gear stick not returning to the centre from 5th side making it hard to select 4th or 3rd coming down the box, this does improve as the gearbox warms up, looking on google it sounds like a common problem and from what I have read the fix is to remove the box and replace the bush where the spring sits?. Can anyone point me in the direction of the bush and anything else I am likely to need.

Yes it's likely the detents in need of replacement. Others have had success putting Amsoil gearbox fluid in

I have this issue. Push the stick to the left it springs back centre.
Push it to the right and it doesn't return with quite the same force. Occasionally get 5th instead of third.
Be interested to see how you go about this.

We had this on @Oldguysrule 2.8, dropped the gear box and sorted the shift pins. Obviously a complete pain to drop the gearbox, but works spot on now.

Write up with pics here - BMW Z3 2.8 Shift Pins

Mine only does it when cold as soon as the gearbox warms up its fine, got better after putting ATM fluid in.

Yep my 2.8 is the same. Worst when cold. I live with it although I would like to get it done at some point.

Thanks for the info. looking like dealer parts then.

yes I thought mine was fixed yesterday after a good 100 mile trip but this morning it was worse than ever but after 10 miles or so started to spring back , it feels like an oil change would be a waste of money (pretty sure bmw gear oil was expensive from past experience !) I will prob order the parts and drop the box out. will let you know how I get on

I changed my gearbox oil as part of a major service two years ago. It made little difference to the gear change but still peace of mind knowing it has fresh oil.

If it hasn't been done it's not a waste of time! Makes a big difference, if you speak to the guys at opieoils.co.uk they'll sort you out with the correct (if not better) stuff and give you a discount if you use ZROAD as well. Still likely the split pins, but if (big if) the change improves things then you may not have to rush in to dropping the gearbox.

Definitely try an oil change first made a huge difference to my gear change, and I wouldn't use oil from BMW, as said ring OPIE

Just changed gearbox oil on my 1997 2.8 with Redline D4 ATM from Opie as recommended on this thread. Hoping against hope that it works as the gearchange is extremely notchy - verging on impossible to select - but the clutch is ok. I'd really like to meet up with the folks on the Shropshire cruise this Sunday, seeing as I live so near. Here's hoping for a good test drive tomorrow....
By the way, filling was dead simple using a short length of hosepipe threaded down through the engine bay -something I would never have thought about without reading it here!

you may see my 1.9 in shrewsbury as we are stopping there sunday night in the premier inn... have you put your name down on the list to do the run ?

my 2.8 gearbox I found very heavy gearchange compared to my 1.9s gearbox i have changed the oil in both the cars the 2.8 has not really been used much on the road yet just a quick run up my local farm private road so not real chance for the gerarbox oil to warm up... hoping that it will get better though once its in use...

Different gear boxes all together pal, the Getrag box in the 2.8 is renowned for being a bit notchy, mine is not as smooth as my 2.0l was but not bad at all

Seems to be a common fault, mines been like this for a while,
But as Dave says learn to live with it. Does get better after a run
But interested if a soil works!

I had a similar issue Z3M. Once I had changed the oil there was a significant improvement and works perfect once its warmed up

You were right! After 50 miles or so it has improved - from being so bad that I had to switch the engine off to select first or reverse and pot luck for getting anything else - to 'just' being very notchy and clunky. Changing down from fourth to third is definitely worse, but now have a good feeling that it will improve with use. (Have just got it out of its winter hibernation and think things had seized up from lack of use). Must admit I was pretty despondent beforehand, thinking the clutch or gearbox had gone, so thanks everyone for all the excellent advice. What a great forum:thumbsup:
