May be a dumb question, but can this simply replace the existing gear knob or do you also need the short shift lever?

Straight replacement and the Storm is shorter so no short shift required. Pull the old one off, slide this one on and then do up 2 grub screws on the base. Worst case the previous owner has glued the old one on...

The cheaper alternative is to wrap a couple of layers of tape around the shaft which will give it a tighter fit. Just don't glue it as you will regret it when you want to change it!

I thought these Storm ones where a bit hyped and not worth the money but after having one I can say it's a worthwhile addition - really makes for a great feel - the shortness and weight of it changes the feel significantly and in a good way.

It gets a touch cold in winter...can get very hot if left in the sun, generally I put the hood up in if parked in the sun as black leather heats up very quickly too!

There are probably cheaper alternatives but I'm not sure if they would be that heavy - I think it weighs 500g

I'm happy I changed my gear knob to one of these but they do get damaged cold / hot with the weather change but it feels great

Got a heavyweight one on my old escort van, not the thing you want to grab hold of on a near freezing morning! Can be bought still very cheap, just put your own decal on top - they're only hyped up lumps of metal !

Yes, I've noticed there are quite a few different cheaper alternatives to the Storm and also some more expensive!

Not sure what you mean Jim, IMO they look no less then top quality, buy cheap, buy twice :D
That's what I meant Sean, as I've never seen either in person. Was wondering if the big name was the reason for the big price or if it really was quality. Thanks for clarifying. JIM

The point I am get at Jim is the one Synclare put on looks like its from Aldi and the MW looks like its from Harrods ;) however, they both do the same job :)

In all honesty this is the one thing that would put me off buying either one. I used to take my mate's missus's car for test, Honda Civic Type R always in the cold weather and it was horrible to drive on a freezing morning, I had one on my Eunos and it was horrible too on a cold day. They look great and a well weighted one is beneficial to gear changing but too much money for me.

Tony.

You need to toughen up Tony ;) Only tends to be an issue for me for a minute or so.

As for the quality, there are cheaper out there but this is a premium product. One I've been more than happy to pay out twice for. That said not only does it look great, it feels awesome and makes a real difference to the gear change.

Fair comment mate, just my take on it. They do improve gear change, no doubt, but they make them out of ice.=)) The shifter in my Z3 was very similar but, at least, on a cold morning I only had to touch it twice. The 2nd time was when I got to work.:)

Over here it's gloves on when it's cold until the interior warms up. Doesn't much matter what kind of knob you have! But I can see the attraction to the storm if the quality is so much better. JIM
