Just wanted to give you all a small update, but don't worry it won't make any difference to how things are on here.

PayPal. *sigh*. Like pretty much every large organisation which deals with large sums of money PayPal now have to comply with EU money laundering legislation. This is to make sure that the Mafia or terrorists aren't somehow funnelling their vast profits of crime through BMW internet forums. Any PP account that receives 2500 euros or more automatically gets their account limited and has to provide legal proof that they aren't Al Qaeda.

With the biggest sale of calendars ever last year we reached potential international criminal status, and I've been struggling to prove we are legitimate (possibly due to the dodgy members on here). We don't make a profit (in fact I'm still down on money I've personally invested), although we do have a small surplus of around £400 at the moment but that's mainly because I haven't been able to pay for anything for over 5 weeks out of the locked account. Meanwhile they are still happy to keep receiving payments in to the account!

I've tried explaining that we are a "not for profit" organisation, but after many weeks of supplying scans of photo ID's, household bills and other requested evidence that's still not good enough. This left me with 2 options, the first being opening a bank account for the forum. Funnily enough the site has a "PayPal" account for handling all the money, so this seemed a little ridiculous and completely pointless addition.

Second option was to register a business with Companies House, of which you can see below we are now fully incorporated. Kind of ridiculous, and cost us £42 for the pleasure of doing so. I now also have to produce yearly accounts to add to the existing work I do.

Bizarrely if I wasn't so honest and transparent with how I handle the donations and (meagre) profits from sales on here, I doubt I would have had to go through this.

So you are now accessing a web service provided by ZRoadster Ltd :D. I can't even begin to explain how ridiculous that sounds in my head... Oh, and don't mess with me because I'm now the Director round here...

To daft to be true really..!!
Surprised at the low cost of starting a LTD in the UK, costs a lot more over here.
Will you have to start charging VAT now on products sold?

The registration is only £17, the rest is so we can have a registered office. That means I don't have my personal details listed on the Companies House database. Otherwise any Tom, Dick or Doris could look me up!

All correspondence to ZRoadster Ltd, 27 Old Gloucester Street, London, United Kingdom, WC1N 3AX in future please

No, don't need to VAT register with the amount we sell.

Wow what a load of tripe! Glad you take the time to keep the site going for us all Gaz. Not being a computer buff I'd never know all the behind the scenes stuff that goes into making a site, just take it all for granted really!

Your work behind the scenes is appreciated, without sounding cheesy - I don't think we, as members, realise the amount of time and effort you put into running the site, thank you! I'm sure you could do without the added work!
David.

I expect the corporation tax bill at the end of the first year will be bigger than 'starbucks' but don't worry 50p is very small change to a ltd company the size of Zedroadster.

Well done that man!
Lots of heartache and hard work to keep the authorities happy.

Hadn't realised the low threshold set for the laundering legislation. My camera club turns over more than that although we do have a bank account of which I'm a signatory. It took several visits to the bank to get it set up. We had to jump through hoops to get electronic banking though. Banks tend not to be interested in not for profit organisations. They just create lots of work for little benefit in their eyes.

There is far more to running the site than I realised Gary. Does this get around the problem with Paypal?

Yes, they lifted the restriction while I was on the phone.

@Redline - you are probably ok as you have home through the hoops with a bank account. This more formalises things for the forum going forwards.

TBH Gary, as much as pain it was, this gives you personally some form of protection. The site is now its own entity so liability is no longer on your shoulders (yes it is your company but not you directly). With the crazy days of the Internet this is no bad thing.

Thanks for all the efforts, did you decide on a bank account or are you persevering with PP?

When I was a manager in the motor trade I had to do all the FSA papers to be able to run the sales and finance teams. The threshold on transactions was constantly being dropped and being updated. When I started the job we could accept upto £10000 in cash against any one transaction. When I came out the job 4 years later that figure was down to £2500 with heavy proofs of I.D. We had a big problem with our travelling community friends turning up with in some cases £40000+ in cash in carrier bags to buy Range Rovers. I kid you not!
