I own a Z3 for the same reason (soul & looks) but personally found the hardtop detracted from both. Fortunately I have another car for the more mundane tasks / journey's.
For me the benefit of buying a Z3 is that it usually affords you the budget to buy a daily beater which in itself provides a different type of motoring enjoyment.
Having said that my first Z3 was bought off the forum for £750 - it was a 1999 M44 and although mechanically sound with a recently replaced roof it was a bit tatty on the body. From 20 yards it delivered on the looks front and had bags of soul - the new roof meant I could leave it out in all weather's and the bodywork meant I could park it anywhere without concern

We just picked up a 1.8 m43 Tu (I think) beautiful body work, no rust, standard oil leak on filter housing sigh, everything works as it should at 71k mls for 3000 quid. There are some total deals lurking around.
It’s a total scream to drive, pairs well with the clk 350 we use for longer cruising
