I always apply a thin smear of genetal prpoze grease to paper gadkets too.
A tip I learned from Shirl's dad who was a REME engineer. Theory being the grease seals the joint but allows for stripping without tearing the gasket, which in turn allows re use of a paper gasket.

Tony.

ps. Reg even applied grease to the sleeved joints on an exhaust for ease of fitting.

Well I made a start today. Getting the Oil Filter Cap off was a real struggle. Perhaps because the garage had struggled to cram the wrong filter into the casing! It's collapsed when being tightened as it's longer than the correct one.

Might try to get my oil filter unit off tomorrow, but As I dont want to drain the oil how do you get the oil out of the filter unit.
Do you just release the cap ???? And any oil in the filter unit will drain back into the sump ????????

Yes - that's it on the M44 easy - change the filter spindle O rings - usually come with the filters these days.

I used a couple of short M6 threaded rods to position the gasket when refitting the cover. Once the other 4 bolts were in place these were removed and the last two bolts screwed in.

@Duncraig , Really like your idea so made a couple today out of some 6mm bar. I added a slot to use a screwdriver just to make it easier. Long one for top left and short one for bottom right.
I hope to get round to replacing the gasket next week and this idea just makes the job that much easier.

These are ok,

but the first attempt was abysmal as it slipped round in the vice and shredded the main body:arghh:

75mm M6 bolts available at B&Q might save you time. I think I got my M6 threaded rod there.
