Thanks for the info, if this is to do with ABS,traction control etc why does the fault manifest itself with the 17" wheels and not with the original 16" wheels?
Coincidence I'd say. You've already said you put the jack through the plastics where the sensor wire runs I would have a good look or better change the rear sensor.

It is a very good question. Can it be co-incidence? Perhaps you disturbed a ABS sensors wires while fiddling with the wheels? It is extremely strange, I agree.

However, I can't see how the wheel size may affect anything other than tyre pressure monitoring system (yes, this one based on sensing and comparing wheels circumference via ABS sensors). However, for ABS or traction control wheel size makes no difference, it uses relative values, e.g. it can sense if a wheel spins quicker than other, but can't know exact speed.

I had a 17inch alloys for some time on my car and haven't had any problems when installed them, nor when put back the 19inchs. Even more, 19's are staggered, so it is 1985.2mm circumference for rears and 1947.2mm circumference for fronts. Haven't had any issue.

I think code read will give you some idea what was this.

Thanks for all your comments, the point about the jack, it only cracked the plastic and did not go through and damage any other components. All opinions seem to point towards an abs sensor but if that is the case I still dont see why there is no problem with the original 16" wheels only the new 17" ones.
Anyway I have kept the 16" wheels and sold the 17" so the problem is sorted although I would stll prefer the 17".
Just the airbag light to fix now.

Same here, I have changed my wheels and fitted with 17 inches with a set of 108s. So far no problems.
