Write off....no way !!!

I had a Meyle bought in last 12 months with metal impeller.

I had an Alhambra that was overheating. It initially confused the garage as everything looked okay. Then they discovered the plastic impeller spinning on the shaft where it had come loose. But was otherwise looking like it was okay

Common ailment on the VAG engines.:(

I have a question for anyone that has the M44 1.9lt engine.
Since removing the waterpump and tensioner for replacement I have seen various pictures showing a second free running pulley.

On my car the top roller is missing and the belt runs from the waterpump to the alternator in a straight line.

Does anyone else have this missing or is it just mine ????

The picture in the advert showed it to have a metal impeller......
The thermostat and belt have been changed, but although the tensioner seems ok, may be worth getting one anyway while its all accessible. Something else to sort today.

Yes, same when I bought mine the picture showed a metal impeller, however, in the reviews there were a number of complaints that the pump delivered was fitted with a plastic one.

BTW I think you are doing a fantastic job on your car and it will be in a better condition than before the mishap. Keep up the good work.

When I had my 1.9 it was fitted with air con and I think there was two belts which could account for the extra pulley , I'm sure someone will correct me I'm on the wrong track

I can say that the AC on my 2.0 Z3 was driven direct from the crank pulley. As for 4 cyl. models i can't say.

My M44 has aircon and two belts. The aircon belt has one tensioner, the alternator belt has one tensioner.

Found this on Pelican’t fix it !! =))

There are two tensioners if aircon is installed, but I now realise from the picture above, the part that I am missing is the Idler. But it does say if equipped. I have a threaded hole location for one but no idler installed.
So anyone know why its seems to be an option???

Did manage to get some work done though. The foam arrived today so with scissors, knife, bits of cardboard and some gorilla glue made up the air box liners.

Took a bit of time as it is not an easy shape but result ok. I bought 15mm foam, but 10mm would have made getting the cage fitted a bit easier......

Made a mess though!!!!

@roadvoyager1 , the Meyle waterpump arrived this morning and it does have a metal impeller.

It is a cast impeller whereas the old unit has a fabricated one.

As I have never had to fit a waterpump without a paper gasket.........
Is it just the O ring that seals these? Any need to put a bead of sealer on the mating faces???

After reading more about the idler pulley and the tensioner, I have a horrible feeling that the pulley I have ordered is the idler one :banghead:
What a plonker!!!!!

But I cant find any info on why some cars had an idler installed and others didnt. And was it only on early cars or added on later ones?
RealOem shows two exploded views one with, one without, but doesnt give any indication why there is an option.
However the fanbelt number is the same for both options

Never mind, wait and see what arrives and sort it then. Might end up having to buy a complete new tensioner assy plus a spacer and bolt for the idler........and fit the lot !!!! =))

Great job @Mazza just about to do some similar water pump and thermostat stuff so gems of info in there!

The idler pully is a mystery on the M44. Mine has one. The Bentley manual indicates 6 cylinder cars also have such.

I have found out what the idler pulley is all about .......
but as it seems to be a secret I am not going to tell anyone=))
( Answer from a Tech guy in Germany)

I have only been asking about my engine 1.9lt M44 so this as far as I know only applies to that engine.

If you have a 70amp Alternator. You dont need one
If you have an 80amp Alternator. Then it is fitted as the belt needs a bit more tension on the Higher Rated Alternator.
Chances are, that if you fitted a new alternator, it would be the higher rated one anyway so I am going to retro fit it as it wont do any harm anyway.

I ".borrowed" these off Autodata yesterday but got engrossed in something and forgot to post them.
These are for 1.8 and both 1.9 variants.

Spot the difference Malc.

Worth pointing out that there are two belts on those diagrams, they imply one.:)

Does the higher rated alternator have "beefed up" bearings to handle the increased tension?

@Ianmc No idea, but would assume that it would be engineered to suit application.

Bit more info to confuse everyone!!!!
I looked at RealOem, and the only part number listed is 12311247488 which is the 80amp alternator.
And so should have the idler pulley fitted.

Just been out the the garage ( braved the rain in my slippers ...call me Bear Grylls) and the alternator currently fitted on my car is labelled BMW made by Bosch, and is part number 1 247 487 but rated 14v 50 - 90 amp.
The Bosch number on it is 0123 320 012, and checking the Bosch catalogue, found that this part has been discontinued.

It would appear that either way the idler gear should be fitted. The current fitted alternator, or replacement should this fail, are both 80A.

Bear Grylls, can't help but think "if it ain't broke and all that!";)

I agree with you, but as I have found a few things that would indicate its had numpties working on it, when I find something that looks wrong, I need to get to the bottom of it.
It may be that there was an idler was fitted at some stage and has just been left off????

(Example of a numpty problem that I found........sump nut done up without the washer and cracked the sump :banghead:. )

I am guessing really but it would appear to me, that the only reason for fitting an idler in that position is to increase the belt wrap around on the alternator pulley. This would help prevent the belt slipping on that pulley which is quite small.

If you look carefully you can see the belt round the crank pulley is thicker (two belts) and also that there are 2 pensioners.

Tony.

You would be extremely eagled eyed to spot this, also the diagrams are captioned "auxiliary drive belt routing" which is singular. Just trying to avoid anybody getting confused, regret you disagree.:(
