How Chinese GP practice unfolded

Summary
  1. Hamilton fastest in first and second practice
  2. Man arrested after running across track to enter Ferrari garage
  3. Massa and Kvyat crash, Vettel spins
  4. Jenson Button's 2011 Canadian GP win voted 'most surprising'
Race pace 1st glance: HAM 0.5secs-ish faster than VET on softs; RAI & ROS closely matched on mediums. N.B. Subject to change on analysis........

Memo to Kimi and Nico - it's not Sunday
Bit of needle on track there between the Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen and Mercedes's Nico Rosberg.
The two were side by side through the first corner and then continued to battle through the next few turns before Rosberg got ahead.
Save something for Sunday lads.

How Chinese GP qualifying played out

Summary
  1. Hamilton becomes only fourth man to take five or more poles at one track
  2. Brit sits alongside Ayrton Senna, Michael Schumacher, Juan Manuel Fangio
  3. Rosberg 2nd, Vettel 3rd, Massa 4th
  4. Bottas 5th, Raikkonen 6th, Ricciardo 7th
  5. Grosjean 8th, Nasr 9th, Ericsson 10th
  6. Hamilton top in Q2, Rosberg 2nd, Saubers through
  7. Kvyat, Maldonado, Perez, Toro Rossos out in Q2
  8. Both McLarens, Manors & Hulkenberg out in Q1
It was a very good day for Lewis Hamilton as he claimed his 41st career pole position with an impressive performance at the wheel of the Mercedes. The double world champion topped every practice session in Shanghai on his way to pole, with team-mate Nico Rosberg trailing unhappily in his wake.
The gap to the Ferraris also looks ominous, but should tyre management come into play in a significant way tomorrow, then the scarlet cars could threaten Hamilton's dominance.

James Weir: Someone had their shreddies for breakfast Lewis Hamilton takes pole for the third time in 3 yrs in China

Luper Daniel: #ChineseGP The Prancing Horse of Vettel simply won't go away. Seems we fixing for another good fight tomorrow.

Wycliffe Alwal: That McLaren who were championship contenders just a few years ago are only faster than Marussia in China qualifying is worrying.

Button: 'Qualifying just wasn't for us'
"We've made good improvements this weekend but qualifying just wasn't for us. I'm relatively happy with the balance.
"Hopefully we'll be racing the cars in front tomorrow, but we hoped to be competing with them in qualifying as well."
Both McLarens out in Q1 - again........

Here's your full top 10
Note the gap of nine tenths of a second between the quickest Mercedes and quickest Ferrari.

1. Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) - 1m35.782s

2. Nico Rosberg (Mercedes) - 1m35.824s

3. Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari) - 1m36.687s

4. Felipe Massa (Williams) - 1m36.954s

5. Valtteri Bottas (Williams) - 1m37.143s

6. Kimi Raikkonen (Ferrari) - 1m37.232

7. Daniel Ricciardo (Red Bull) - 1m37.540s

8. Romain Grosjean (Lotus) - 1m37.905s

9. Felipe Nasr (Sauber) - 1m38.067s

10. Marcus Ericsson (Sauber) - 1m38.158s

How the Chinese GP unfolded

Summary
  1. Hamilton defends himself after Rosberg accuses him of deliberately slowing him down
  2. Briton says: "I'm not really quite sure what his problem is"
  3. Hamilton wins, Rosberg 2nd, Vettel 3rd, Raikkonen 4th, Massa 5th
  4. Button and Maldonado crash after battling for position
  5. Bottas 6th, Grosjean 7th, Nasr 8th, Ricciardo 9th, Ericsson 10th
  6. Hulkenberg, Kvyat, Maldonado, Verstappen out
Malcolm Shields: It's so pathetic this 'handbags saga' between Lewis and Rosberg. Put your toys back boys, shut up and race. Enough.

Sam McAllister: Disappointed that Nico Rosberg has become so sour, finding excuses. It's sport. If you don't win, dust off and try harder.

Reece Young: Shoe on the other foot Hamilton would have attacked and passed Rosberg - difference between a World Champion and a good driver.

Tracie Louise: Really tho... Is he that daft that he can't see that if he'd pushed harder he could challenge Lewis? Its always someone else's fault.

Andrea Skyring: At the end of the day Lewis Hamilton drove to win the race. Saving tyres or fuel. As far as I can see, no compromise took place.

Paul Alexander Grant: Nico has become a poor loser, many times last season we heard the team to Lewis to hold 2 second gap. Lewis ignored it & beat him.

This subject has really got you guys going. Anyone going to come down on Rosberg's side in this? Anyone?

Penalty for Button
Jenson Button has been penalised five seconds, dropping him to 14th place, following his collision with Lotus driver Pastor Maldonado. The McLaren driver ran into the back of the Venezuelan as the pair scrapped for 13th place.
Button also receives penalty points on his superlicence.

When is a crash not a crash?
Define a 'crash' as contact that instantly ends a car's session. The Chinese Grand Prix was right on the limit, but since they were both able to drive away, it was more of an 'assisted spin'
That clears that up...

That's not a crash... THAT'S a crash!

Wa-waaaah........
Here's a picture of the marshals doing a Laurel & Hardy as they tried time and time again to push Verstappen's car through the pitwall, to ironic cheers from the Chinese crowd in the main start-finish stand.

Meanwhile....
The 'Has Pastor Maldonado crashed?' website has still not updated.
Disappointing.

Thinking about it Gail, when did you do your predictions? You have to get them registered before qualifying.

Darn it, just read this on BGP, that's why I did not get the points last race.

ERROR! - You are over budget! Your 3 cars and 3 drivers must not exceed £ 75 million.
