Haas driver Kevin Magnussen, who finished fifth: "It wasn't a P4 but after a bad time since Australia it was good to get some points and get a nice result and get the Championship going. Thanks to the guys.

Encouragement for Leclerc
Although not in the points for Sauber, it was also still an encouraging performance for Ericsson's team-mate Charles Leclerc, the 20-year-old competing in only his second Formula 1 race.

He came 14th, finishing ahead of Haas' Romain Grosjean and the Williams pair of Lance Stroll and Sergey Sirotkin who were the last two finishers.

Sebastian Vettel is also one happy man. Two races, two wins. The perfect start to his season.

'We just managed to stay ahead'
Race winner Sebastian Vettel, speaking to Sky Sports: "The plan changed once at the end, Valtteri was closing in and we didn't have the luxury to wait and respond to what he was doing.

"We went on the soft tyre and they were on the medium tyres so with something like 20 laps I got the call to say how are we changing strategy because the tyres were starting to come off.

"With 10 laps to go it was as if the hammer dropped and the tyres were really struggling but we just managed to stay ahead of Valtteri."

'Hopefully a better fight with Ferraris in China'
Lewis Hamilton, who jumped up from ninth to third, speaking to Sky Sports: "I am honestly really happy with it. Emotion is always firing. I am sure people watching on the edge of their seats can get an idea. It is so intense.

"I was really grateful my car was not broken (after the early Verstappen clash) because that would have been difficult but I am 17 points down after two races.

"Hopefully at the next race we will have a better understanding of the tyres and a better fight with the Ferraris."

The race attendance has been revealed and 33,000 lucky people were present in Bahrain to watch that one.

They won't be forgetting this one any time soon. Sebastian Vettel wins it by only 0.6 seconds.

There is not long to wait before the next race of the season, with the Chinese Grand Prix taking place next Sunday.

The schedule for China is...

• Practice one - Friday, 13 April - 03:00 BST.
• Practice two - Friday - 07:00 BST
• Practice three - Saturday, 14 April - 04:00 BST
• Qualifying - Saturday - 07:00 BST
• Race - Sunday, 15 April - 07:10 BST

That race was the second of last season, but will be the third of 2018. Last year Lewis Hamilton won, with Sebastian Vettel second and Max Verstappen third.

Sebastian Vettel snatched a last-gasp Chinese Grand Prix pole position from Ferrari team-mate Kimi Raikkonen as Lewis Hamilton struggled.

Raikkonen was the quicker Ferrari going into the final runs but a scrappy final sector and a superb one from Vettel gave the German pole by 0.087 seconds.

Mercedes lacked performance - Hamilton was 0.58secs off pole and fourth behind team-mate Valtteri Bottas.

Hamilton now must prevent losing more ground to Vettel in the championship.

"Difficult day," said Hamilton afterwards. "Today just went away from us, Ferrari upped their pace throughout the weekend, probably not showing their true pace yesterday."

Vettel said: "I was happy with the whole lap, not just the last sector. The lap was amazing, it just kept getting better."

"The first lap I made a few mistakes, lost the rear in Turn Three and again in Turn Six. I was beating myself up but I knew if I had a better lap I could do it."
