Am I being thick? Why do you need an earth to be one of the seven? I would expect you to need side lights supply wires, though.
Well you need an earth, the fibreglass isn't very conductive.

This can stay a positive helpful thread. I think we are at odds as to how many 7 cores you have run. On my kobra I ran one 7 core from the original light connections up the inside of the old bonnet opening for each side. This gave me 14 wires. Each side used Earth, Side, Low, Main, Earth (for Indicator), Indicator. I split the Earths to give a little fault tolerance (possibly overkill). I had one core left should I want to fit front fogs.

As I said before I took the trouble to document this as I thought it would either help me with next build or future builders.

Cheers

I kind of assumed that BMW used separate feeds for the lights for a reason and wasn't sure about putting both sides of the lights on the same cable so I've taken the feeds from both sides at the front of the car back to the hinge and have run a cable along the bonnet.
This has given me one cable with 7 cores which I've used as :
Left main
Left low
Left indicator
Right main
Right high
Right indicator
These are all 0.5mm
And the 0.75mm I've used as a common earth for all the circuits.

There's been a lot of frustration with it at the moment not least my apparent inability to work with the gel coat, and spotting that I had missed the sidelights today really wrapped up the week.
Apologies if I sounded off.

Understand your frustration and feel for you chappie.

Makes much more sense with your description. I was shown how to do it by someone more experienced and went me route as knew no better. A secondary cable (3 core) would sort you out and need another connector ?

If I did mine again I would have introduced some form of connection at the hinge end of the bonnet and used the .75 cable as an Earth! I just used the colours explained to me and the white was used for one of the light feeds.

I therefore have a beefy non earth wire and have to remove the wiring down each under side of the bonnet if I need to remove it...

If you haven't done the rear I have drawn up some of that detail too. It does think the car is a 2001 but I bet not much of the BMW wiring colours varied a great deal over the model years.

Thanks, yes I came to the same conclusion and have ordered a 3 core, hope I can get it down the trunking.
I did catch the removing the bonnet problem and have a 7 way connector block between the wiring on the bonnet and the wiring on the car.
I started with the rear as seemed more straightforward - leaving the doors till last as they feel more of a challenge.
Got the kids home this weekend so was hoping to get the bonnet back on with the extra help, but I guess not. Oh well they can always help me take the gearbox out of the Herald - although that won't pleas the other half to have another immobile car!

Good point. I forgot that your lights are at the end of the bonnet, and the wire has to go the length of the bonnet back around the hinge.

I was right - I was being thick 🤪 .
😁, found some 2 core wire that will fit in the conduit so probably using the one earth for all the lights. Threading it in will be... Interesting..
Yes my cables go across the front of the car, back down to the hinge, on to the bonnet, up to the front and then across the front.

Ok, so got the extra wire through the conduit (just) and have wired in the plugs for the headlights and sidelights:

so many things left to do, just need to pick an order. I'm thinking
bonnet back on and do the plug to the car side of the new loom.
Fasten drivers headlight bowl
position passenger side bowl and fill the bodywork until it meets it.
Sand and fill, sand and fill, sand and fill,.....
then gelcoat the indicator mounts and then the new bit around the headlight
sand and fill, sand and fill, ....
fit and fix the grill temporarily
then finish off the rest of the bonnet: more sanding and filling.

and then onto the doors!
in the meantime I have another project to fit bits to:

Not a BMW.
I'm having a busy Christmas (if I can get away with it)

She is back on her wheels so that I can get the headlights sorted. Handy tip: make sure that the handbrake is on when you lower the car - I've just run myself over with it.

Looking good. Well worth giving the under bonnet a coat of flow coat, stops all the dirt and road debris sticking to the rough GRP, needs to be done before it gets dirty.

Thanks, will give it a go. Got some time before there's any danger of it getting dirty though.

Good call regarding flow coat Steve. I did mine and glad that I did. Mine is grey so it helps a little bit with the light under the bonnet if I ever lift it up.

Coming along nicely there Piran. Well done 👏

Have you raised the bonnet bulge. I've moved mine about 6 to 8 inches further up the bonnet as I felt it was too close to the front. This has reduced the height but I don't remember mine being as high as yours. Yours, like Dan's will be slightly different to mine as I have the 1st production one, that had slightly different lines. It's needed loads of fettling in areas (particularly front indicators) that Dan's mould didn't. I've had to recess the indicators as they pointed downwards when fitted to the bodywork. Dan's fitted perfectly.
