Dived under the car armed with spanners and sockets….. then got back up again to get the right ones ( more than once I might add :arghh: :banghead: )

But bits coming off at the rate of ……. A snail with breathing problems…=))…. But all going well till I had to undo the handbrake cable….. could pull it out so … quickly on to plan B…. Remove the disc, caliper brakes and release the other end of the handbrake cable.

only once did the drive shaft whack me on the head so not bad going….

And ……voila !!!!!

And stop the clock………..

The bit of dowel is just to see if the arms were aligned …. And they do seem to be

2 hours 10 minutes=))=))=))=))

ffs……Lee and co take the whole rear beam assembly out in about an hour!!!!

oh well now you all know why this project has taken so long:)
But it would have been a lot less if I didn’t have to keep getting up off the floor so many times:eek:

Wow.... a few days ago I started on Page 1.... and now reached page 37.... I feel I've done the Z3 equivalent of War & Peace... what a journey, what a rollercoaster!!..... you have far more patience than I Malc.. ..that's a full nut and bolt restoration....mightily mightily impressed... I've bookmarked a lot of the pages for when I get my rear end up in the air ( ooo-er Missus)... is there an internet equivalent for dog eared pages ?

Got off my a**e today and did some work on the car.

Removed the other trailing arm so I can check all the measurements ( they should be mirror images!!)
So took an hour and a quarter to have it sitting on the floor …. Better than last time !!

I will also get a length of 10/12mm dowel to run through the two bushes, and with a straight edge on the hub, check the angle and dimensions.

Access to the beam is better now so will be able to check that as well.

The Lean-to had visitors a week or so ago,
Trev ( @TrevD66 ) and his dad Keith popped in while on their UK trip. ( Honoured to have Australian Royalty 😋 look over the project )
Together with Alan and Maxine Slade who also dropped in, had a really nice few hours.

And why did I never sell any straps set to Australia???? They dont have rust problems like we do…..:arghh:

I wasn’t going to mention this but I like to share my useless dopey side …. Both seats need to come out again as when the seat control button is pushed forward ….. the seats go back:whistle::whistle:=))=))
Oh well. Something else to sort

Hi @Mazza, it was great to catch up and get a good look at the progress on your 2.8. Your hospitality along with @Alan Slade and Maxine was very much appreciated.
I’m glad to hear that at least you know what the issues are although I know it’s a pain in the butt knowing that you spent a fistful on that trailing arm.
Hopefully @Lee or @spurs fan in a coupe can assist with a good one and you can progress further.
Good luck with your progressing forward on your project. It’s a real credit to you.

I would be tempted to stand a bottle jack between the 2 bushes and try spreading the ends of the arm. Just till you get a good fit between the brackets on the arm. It has to be bent between the bushes and the cross bar?

Tony.

Bit of measuring this morning , albeit, a bit Heath Robinson, but the offside mounting arms are 5mm narrower than the nearside arms.

This is the n/s
F185D9E9-A339-4650-BAFB-BFA6255AA289.jpeg

on the o/s the dowel touches the bush ( based on the same ref points I marked on the dowel to line up on the other bush)

E596D0F5-66B7-48D8-A5E0-9244C3F28DE8.jpeg

marks on the dowel are lined up either side of the arm bush, then using a straight edge against the hub marked a line where it meets the dowel.
Did this on both trailing arms……
ED2806DA-7B63-48DA-AA94-63B96A8E934D.jpeg

Red is offside arm green is nearside arm. ( and there shouldn’t be any difference :()
That distance is about the same as the amount of tyre showing outside of the wheel arch , which first made me think there was a problem.

Tony, ( @t-tony) I dont think just a bottle jack would sort the problem, as I cant be 100% sure which one has been bent and slightly twisted.

Makes me wonder if it had been dropped by the courier when it came from the States, as the back plate was dented , and checking back to the original photos that I was sent , it was ok.

Just need to find a replacement arm now !!

or Just break the bloody thing , sell the parts and buy a Z4 !!!!!😋😋😋😋
