Led ones way better. I have a set that you can change colour but I will swap out at some point due to the white being more of a blue for my liking.
Agree, had both CCFL ones and although they are good the LED ones are much brighter. I had the colour changing ones but the white was blue, so went for a set of 6000K ones off an E36 and they have been great although 2 do need a little cutting to get them to fit.

@g8jka Do you have a link for the E36 ones you used?

I know the big rings are 131mm, I did have all the dimensions from an old set of CCFL's but can't find them at the moment. And I've just looked if I have the old CCFL rings which I took the tubes out and saved the casings but I must have thrown them as I can't find them either so not much help.

They look different to the Z3 type as they are both the same size for each light, do they fit ok
Yes specific Z3 ones are different, but you can cut these down. One normal ring in each headlight is fine then you need to cut down the other one, I think it was by 9 LED's. As the wiring only comes out of one end the other side can be cut, normally every 3 LED's to keep the whole light working or at least that's what I did and 9 was perfect from what I remember. You can just cut through the casing with a junior hacksaw and fit the same as you would with CCFL's. That's if your fitting behind the inner lense I think, if you go infront like I have done I think I had to trim some off both rings but I can't remember. Could have been 3 LED's off one and 9 LED's off the other. They are even brighter as well which is a bonus.

those are similar to the ones i am looking at currently:
I have just bought a set of headlights to try them in, and am thinking either these:

or these

s-l1600-2.jpg

just weighing up now, and have had the sizes confirmed as 128mm dia large ones, and 120mm dia smaller ones

I think the flat bottom on them, will suit the Z3 flat bottomed lens shape perfectly.
first set would be behind the lens, the second set is in front.
the second set do not seem to protrude as much as the ones in your link, I think I prefer the slimmer ones in my link.

@g8jka quick question; I've finally got round to fitting these and the wiring is a little more involved than the CCFL ones (5 pin relay, plenty of wires...).

Did yours come with a wiring diagram as mine did not?

No I don't think it did, but I never used the relay. I think that's if you want them to dim on and off with the interior lights. I just used the live wire into the fuse box to an ignition live (can't remember which fuse) and the other to a ground. So mine only come on with the ignition. If you want them to dim on and off with the interior lights that's when you need to install the relay.

Love the coloured LED units but as said the white is a bit blue. Is anyone trying to fit a set of them above ?

If they work well I would be tempted to revisit mine.

Cheers for that @g8jka - all fitted now and wired in to the sidelights; dead easy!

Hi

to bring up an older post, has anyone got photos of how these look? Are they bright enough?
Where did you buy them from?

thanks

its in my journal, as below:

s-l64.jpg

I always wondered what DTM style LED's would look like, and so I bought some for a pair of old headlights I had in the back of the garage.

First I separated the front lens from the body using a heat gun, (I normally use the oven but dinner was in there)
I did this so I could remove the ginger lens. I have some white lenses on my current lights, but I didnt want to separate those just yet, however removing the ginger lens gives a nice shiny chrome reflector.

Refitted the fronts again, and then separated the backs from the body to get to the light lenses.

so I used transparent silicone to hold them in place:

Both fronts were a bit scratched and dull:

so some 1500 grade wet'n'dry then a polish with some cutting compound did the trick on both.

fitted back together:

then onto the other side

and the end result?

Photo's don't do them justice really, they are very bright..

Yes they are a bit smaller than the light lenses, but the original horseshoe LED's were never entirely the same diameter either, but these have the flat bottom to match the flat bottom on the headlights unlike the horseshoe ones.
