Feedback from people at the track was that they couldn’t tell what was going on, didn’t have clear sight of a screen and those that did had no countdown timer on it so had no clue of where things were and then saw drivers crawl past (if already out). Also saw drivers out of car and realised in some cases they’d given up as time was against them, people left stands 4 mins before chequered flag.

If he were alive today, and an F1 fan, I suspect there would have been a knowing tut and a roll of the eyes if he had witnessed qualifying yesterday.

Sticking with the much criticised format from Australia had, perhaps unsurprisingly, the same outcome - an anticlimactic finish and prolonged moments of silence on the track.

Still, the race in Australia turned out all right. Here's hoping for the same outcome in Bahrain today...

F1 Gossip: Drivers 'no longer muppets', Ferrari predict Spanish win.​

Mercedes' Nico Rosberg believes the enforcement of radio restrictions this season means fans can no longer say drivers are "muppets" who are directed by their team.
Carlos Sainz is convinced he will get his chance to race with Red Bull despite them promoting Max Verstappen to its lead team.
Reserve driver Stoffel Vandoorne is aware of interest elsewhere in the paddock, but has stated his desire to race with McLaren next year.
Mercedes has no doubts that Lewis Hamilton will bounce back from his troubled start to the campaign after admitting it had let the world champion down so far.

Lewis Hamilton says he is ready to climb a "steep mountain" after the setbacks he has suffered so far this season.

Max Verstappen was satisfied with his first day as a Red Bull driver in Spain, and insisted that there is much more to come.
Verstappen's long-term Formula 1 future is at Red Bull, says team principal Christian Horner.

Sebastian Vettel thinks Red Bull had decided to drop Daniil Kvyat in favour of Verstappen before his clash with the Russian two weeks ago in Sochi.
