About half way to work this morning I had to stop at a road junction while some cars turned off the main road. While there (bear in mind my hands were on the steering wheel at all times) my windows dropped 2" and then my roof opened, now this morning was sunny, warm and dry (luckily not p****** it down). On arriving at work I tried to close the roof with the switch on the centre console, nothing doing. I got out of the car and tried with the remote ................. roof closed ??
At lunch I went to fill up with fuel and tried the roof, no chance either way. Tried again about 4 ish with the button inside the car, ..... roof opened !! Left it open till home time and have just been out to the garage and nothing doing with either option. Hope it's dry, warm and sunny again tomorrow.
If that roof is closed in the morning I will begin to believe it is haunted.=))
So @billz and @Redline and anyone who has the GapTec module, has this ever happened to you please??
Absolutely no indication of any problem before this morning, when it started to open I almost crapped myself

Tony.

on the Z3 they overcame this problem by fitting hi-Tec fool proof driver operated roof anchoring devices to each front corner to prevent such silliness.
You should try it :)

I was going to ask if you had the spare key in your pocket but that doesn't explain the other problems though.
The buttons should still work regardless of the gaptech box. Do you have any other devices tucked under there that could cause a short? Is the fuse ok?

It didn't open while I was moving Dino (although you can on a Z3 up to 15mph), I was stationary with brake applied. It won't work without brake lights lit.

I printed all the fuse and relay info from Autodata this afternoon Ian, 2 are for the "multi switch" on the centre console, but seeing as the heated seat switches and the DSC and tyre pressure set switch all work I'm guessing that fuse will be good. There is a bigger fuse that supplies that switch assy. too. I will have to have a look when I can but as usual my time is at a premium !! ;)
Just hope the weather forecast till weekend is as good as they're saying.:)

Take a brolly

You can manually close the roof. A bit of a faff but can be done.

I heard that the Z4 has a methane detector located in the roof, if there is a build up of obnoxious gases the roof will open automatically to provide ventilation =)).

Joking aside Tony, hope you get it sorted.

@t-tony Never had any issues with mine. I know @MAURICE THE MARTIAN has with it sometimes working and then sometimes not. Like Ian says it should work regardless of the Gaptech with the buttons. So it could be the actual roof module. Might be a trip to BMW to see if they can find out what happened. They may be able to do that with the software

Hahaa....Just wet myself, serves you right Big Ears for buying non OEM kit.
Try a big sticker from the front of the roof onto the wind screen, that should work......

OK, What are the electrical conditions (closed or open contacts) required to operate the top. I'm guessing that having the foot on the brake is one. Once you know what they are, you can investigate each one and find the one (or more) that is faulty.

My guess is that one is faulty (intermittent or permanent) and just waiting for you to put your foot on the brake and have the car below the required speed etc.

Mine won't work on the button Mozz. Code read at work pointing at that being faulty.
