Without wiring and circuitry details it's all but impossible to guess what's going on. Would need to see the voltages on the various inputs and outputs to the switch panel. Is the roof control done entirely in that panel or is there some other body system controller that does the logic control?

I don't see how the battery going flat could cause the uncommanded opening. It might have caused the codes to register I suppose but makes little sense otherwise.
I have the full systems information for the E89. Not much use but the information is out there. Will do some digging for the E85

The roof controller is a module behind the passenger seat which I think is above the location of the motor. There's precious little information about it other than used ones for sale on eBay.
BMW probably have a maintenance document like they do for the E89. Haven't been able to unearth it yet.
Will look again today.

Glad you got it resolved ...
The roof on my old pug 306 cab had s sequence if the roof forgot it or its position you had to run the system through the cycle manually to reset the hood ecu ..
Maybe it just lost its way ?

Cautiously optimistic Dave. I have a feeling I created the fault by putting my wash bucket in the boot and unknowingly turned one of the lifters for the boot ceiling/roof stowage compartment floor which stop a switch operating correctly. Here's hoping. It's working off the fob this morning.

Last Friday I re-booted the GapTech module by removing the cig. lighter fuse (no.5, 15A) for 10 seconds. This appeared to resolve the issue, ie the roof was closed and it opened via the key at home time. Later on Friday evening it also closed by the key too. Sorted? Err, no! Out for a bimble this afternoon, for failed to open by key, or, from console switch. Waiting at a road junction, Windows drop and roof lowers just as the sky turns as black as night, oh Bugger !! Anyway, some spirited driving saw me home, only 12 miles, and in the garage before it started spitting with rain. So I've removed the module now and the roof operates from the console switches and sadly this points to a module malfunction. Gary at GapTech has already said he will replace my module and has been extremely helpful. Waiting for this and then will get it fitted.

Hope that fixes it Tony. Just the reason why I'd like to connect it up using a harness/connectors rather than jointing and soldering.
Did you cut the module wires so you can choc-bloc the old tails to make reconnecting the new one a lot simpler?

I did leave 2" tails Ian to make connection easy
