Having seen numbers somewhere in the torsional rigidity of the Z3 compared to E86/86 and E89 I can understand why some would want to have this brace fitted. The Z3 deflection needs only 1/10th of the force as an E89 needs. I suspect there is so much metal because there is no diagonal bracing. Being a square it will still flex but with that strength allied to the body itself I can see it adds an enormous amount of rigidity at the cost of weight.
Will it be beneficial in normal driving?
I expect it would but not as much as on track. There however the weight counts against you but better handling is likely to offset that.
I'd keep the rigidity.
I remember also seeing the torsional figures, IIRC the Z3 was pretty much half of the Z4 (E85/86) 5000 vs 9500 or something like that.

That's why we're cautioning about taking it off Dave. Try with the new suspension for a while before taking the brace off or you might be going from a rock hard go-kart ride to something that actually feels a whole lot worse. Drive somebody else's Z3 that only has the strut brace to do a comparison before you strip it out.

Hi Dave, you do realise this brace may be the only thing that is holding the back end of the car to the front end.LOL!!! in any case you may be surprised when you remove it.

Hi Brian. I only tootle about mate. Occasionally a staight line sprint but that's about it. I have never been one for fast cornering so I can't see the point in carrying the extra weight and selling it would give me a few quid towards something else.
Whats next on your list @Grumpy

I'd suggest leaving it Dave, you're young now and can take the ride but as you get older you might just appreciate the stiffness it give you well into old age!! JIM

I'm hoping to get the strong strut removed in the next 3-4 weeks so I can move it on and put the money into the "new roof for Reggie fund". If anyone is interested in it please let me know. It's been valued by @Lee and @Brian H at somewhere north of £200 so I'll put it up at £250. They are $450 new from Americaland.
If no one is bothered I'll advertise it properly and put a for sale ad on here once it's removed. :)

Grumps.

Anyway, in the cold old fridge that is the Z shed (Midlans) HQ this very afternoon me and my apprentice put Reggie on a strict diet. Off came god knows how many kilos in the body brace, but while we were at it we removed his redundant spare wheel carrier too. A few pictures of the "boy" hard at work.

Very privileged to be supping out of a special cup which was a lovely gift from the @Bozzy Steve and Sara.
By the time the third musketeer arrived, with his Costa's coffee!, we had moved onto the second project of the afternoon fitting some sport springs on @Tony Wilson Z4.
I remarked to Grumps that it was nice to see him working on a proper car, and this was the reaction, Monkey!!=))

Nice to meet up with Ant again and as always he pitches in and gets his hands dirty too.

The Z4 after a short settle down run round the block.

And finally a quick pic of the car park before Dave and Ant headed off home.

We stood and nattered, as usual, till we were all just about frozen then called it a day.
I think next Saturday will be a compression test for @Faheem.:)
