Welcome Katie,

I have also recently (just today) had a new steering angle sensor put in and calibrated, as my traction control/dsc light did flicker on a bit too keenly on smooth corners - and the fault codes showed it was this sensor. When he fitted it today, he said he'd run the codes again and this time a new code was also showing up once or twice - my transverse acceleration sensor (supposedly located in a box under the drivers seat) given what I paid for this sensor, I'm not in any massive hurry to change another! Do people think that the transverse sensor is one that really needs doing? or will it likely be damaged again if water gets into the floor of the car (felix is pretty watertight - but I imagine we all occasionally get water leaking in from soft or hardtop at window when it really rains!)
DSC on or cars can be a bit sensitive the older they get, I recently changed my transverse acceleration sensor due to an over active DSC light, and I would agree it was active in long sweeping corners. After changing the sensor I did notice a small difference but the biggest difference was when i changed the rear beam bushes, this stopped a lot of the body roll which I believed was causing my DSC to flash like a christmas tree.

The sensor is located under the carpet just underneath the passenger seat (remember these cars were built in the US so all the manuals etc are based on LHD cars). It lives just under the black triangular capping.

I would be interested in the error code for the unit if you have that information?

I still have my old transverse acceleration sensor that you are welcome to for price of postage, I do not think there is anything wrong with it. Maybe its worth a try?

Brian

Hi Ya
Nice car, same wheels as mine just waiting to get them redone by the alloy wheel man.
My lad has the 3ltr version and wow there is a lot of power to play with, not many cars I have to slow down to join the motorway, was doing ahem!!! close to 70mph:whistle: down the slip road and had to slow to join and there weren't a lot of cars around, that was fun:)
Mine 2.2 seem plenty for me.

Hi again all! I hope everyone's having a good Thursday!

Well what to say other than WOW... I am feeling quite overwhelmed by such a positive response, such helpful comments and such a warm welcome! thank you!! :)

I'll try and make sure I address each question asked!

So why the name Felix? Well, being female, I do like my costume dramas (you know...pride and prejudice and stuff like that!) and in one (called Brideshead revisited) the main character is a bit of a 'cad', a guy called Felix! He's this dapper, handsome and good looking young guy going around breaking all the girls hearts! There was my zed with his beautiful bodywork and his gorgeous straight 6 engine under the hood that roars away- I could just imagine my zed being a bit of a heart breaker and thought the name suited him perfectly! ;)

Dave (mint) - I think I'm a 'closet biker' because I must drive with the roof down 99% of the time (unless it's really chucking it down!). I have the hardtop on at the minute, but I think I only really use it because it came with the car and I feel I should make use of it (though I have to say it is a beautiful thing and gives the car a completely different style and feel). It'l be coming off in a few weeks and off it will stay until november time! I think on a clear night when all the stars are out is one of the best times to have the roof down! there's no better feeling :)

MetalMickey - it's a small world! I used to work in orthopaedics and I covered all of the Yorkshire and Humber, so our patches would have crossed over quite significantly! it's a wonderful lifestyle and I did love my job, but I'd have always thought 'what if?' if I hadn't gone for it. I do miss the fuel card though!! I also think you're right - some modern day mechanics just don't get it. They're so used to dealing with brand new cars which are virtually all electronics these days. What happened to just lifting up the bonnet and having a tinker?! ;) This is why I'm so pleased I've signed up on here and don't know why on earth I didn't do it sooner! This is exactly the kind of thing I needed - fellow enthusiasts of the beautiful z3 who I can share tips and advice with and gain so much experience by sharing experiences with others! brilliant!!

Thanks Roadvoyager1 - I need to find these other elusive York and area members! I have seen quite a few zeds in york, but I've never met any of their owners in person. I wonder if some of them are on this group!

Thanks Gary - the advice has been just brilliant and I want you all to know that I've taken some screen shots of the thread so that I can show the mechanic and give them some direction as to what to check out and where to start looking when I go in next tues. I will most definitely report back on here as to what we find out and what we decide to do!

Gary - i'll dig out the shoebox and have a rummage through ;) Though I don't think I've spotted a receipt for a new water pump or repairs on any existing one, and my car now has 130,000 on its clock (miles which have been very much enjoyed!!;))

Jonco - the bubbler kit is definitely something worth bearing in mind. I am hopeful now though that it isn't an issue with the head gasket (or at least I am keeping my fingers crossed that it's not!) I don't have any other signs of the problem developing other than that my coolant appears to be going down a lot quicker than it aught to

Kit - yes aren't our split rims beautiful?! Mine too need refurbishing, but because I'm having to be a bit more mindful of finances at present, I can't afford to get them refurbished just yet :( I do spend money on keeping Felix in good condition out on the road (and think it's money very well spent!) but I think the alloys may have to wait a little longer. Yes it's a little too easy to pick up speed in and I am rather fond of my accelerator pedal! ;)hehe. I can't think of a better car to enjoy a pure, raw drive in when the sun is shining and you're down some quiet country back roads that you know well! There are some beautiful roads out in the countryside around York and in North Yorkshire! we are very fortunate!

Brian - that sounds absolutely wonderful! and if you're sure you wouldn't mind parting with it? I'd be ever so thankful for your old transverse acceleration sensor! more than happy to cover postage! thank you so much again!! let me know how I can get some postage monies to you!

For all the rubbish that goes on in this world, it restores your faith in human nature when you meet some lovely people who are willing to help you out and offer advice. The advice on here has been brilliant and has given me a great starting point for my investigations into felix's mysterious vanishing coolant! It makes all the difference! Thank you!! Really looking forward to getting to know you all better :thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

Please do let me know as well if anyone is hosting any meet ups over the summer or if indeed anyone would ever like to meet up! I'd love to meet some other z3 owners in the future and I have to admit, it'd be great to get some help with things at times! Maybe a tinkering session!

I'm quite happy to travel (I get to drive my beautiful baby after all!) but I'd have to plan bigger trips (3-4 hours plus) properly in advance. Is there a big meet scheduled for later in the year in the UK? :)

A warm welcome from Rotherham/Sheffield. Your posts make great reading and clearly show you are very passionate about your Zed.

As you've already found out there's plenty of friendly and helpful people on here. Keep your eyes peeled for get-togethers. Last year there was a good meet at Lotherton Hall (not far from you) - Cars in The Park which involved about 200 cars and around 30 of these were Zeds.

Happy Zedding.

A bit further south (probably 2 hours drive for you) but this is definitely worth thinking about too - https://zroadster.org/threads/midland-meet-16-08-15.6328/ it was well attended by only Zeds last year and looks like it will be even busier this year.

as an ex rep (life on the road in your car!) i don't mind driving long distances at all! And actually yes Leics is pretty close to me really in the grand scheme of things :)

That said... I have a horrible feeling I might have a formative exam that morning. Do you know what time the meet will begin? I couldn't see it on the post, but that could be just me being useless! I can always head up after :)

Hi Katie and welcome

We've also got a 3.0i and also had a DSC fault from the transverse sensor and wouldn't pay BMW prices for a new one so found a used on in USA fitted it and all faults gone. There was one at Alexanders of Somerset last year as he found one after I got mine.

Here is the location of the sensor, it's the one nearest the big bundle of wires.
passenger side.

Tony - ' is there anything specifically I aught to ask them to take a look at next week? Or would mentioning a possible slow leak in the cooling system be enough to point them in the right direction?

Thanks in advance

Hi again Katie, sorry for late reply from yesterday's question and as several members have covered a general health check of the cooling system should discover where the coolant is going. Aren't these "old" cars great. I hope you have lots of fun in the sun this year along with the rest of us Zedders.:)

Last year I'm pretty sure it was lunchtime/early afternoon so it might still work. I doubt it will be a problem if anyone turned up late.

The meet at Newark last June was a morning start but as I work every Saturday it was early afternoon before we could get there but many members were still there. Great to meet them too.:)
