Absolutely Andy, wasn't meaning to preach or anything. The discs I mentioned are very good I have Pagid ones on my Z3. Excellent items. They also take a coat of paint really well too if you intend applying some paint to the brakes at the same time. Re the grin factor - just been out with a mate to show him how quick my Z4 is, I think he likes it.:) Good luck with all the things you want to do.

Tony.
All good, thanks for the advice will sort front and back discs and pads.

Here are some cracks in a crane brake and the same brake drum after NDT. New drum has to be made but the cracks didn't go through.

Long travel, We think the brake had not been lifting fully. Whilst we were there also checked the 2 hoist and the auxiliary was starting. Gonna be expensive as they have decided on 3 new drums and shoes . Shoes ar probably original and 'Do not comply with current specifications'

You don't see too many cranes with the "full set" of shaft brakes these days. A lot of the old cranes have had new end carriages and/or new crabs with modern type braked motors.
If the shoes weren't lifting fully I'm thinking continued hot running and cooling has caused the surface cracks. If the cracks had gone through those drums would have shattered.
I'd recommend they consider buying a newer crane.

I used to see cracks like those on tractor brakes back in the day when I worked on agricultural machines.

Hi Andy just as a side note on this one, was cleaning the wheels on my E89 the other day and noticed marks similar to the ones in your photograph. Not worried though, they are just pad marks on the discs and will wear off in time.

Hi, wondered were this thread had gone for a few posts needed to pull all my lateral thinking back. Having the discs and pads changed on tues and the new wheels put on as well. Figured there is wear on the discs may as well do them and forget.

Just picked up the Pagid discs, pads and sensor from Europarts in Hoddesdon, after being p***** off by some snotty little ass-wipe in the Harlow branch. I phoned the head office to have a moan about said ass-wipe and his crap attitude, they apologised and gave me a discount on top of the on-line price.

So after some thought
1..I,m either getting old and grumpy.
2..I don't understand the modern parlance associated with buying car parts.
3..Am easily mugged off for an extra 10% discount and have been (using the modern parlance) weggied

Time to get the Gibbs reflective cycle out and some self evaluation.

Hi, brakes and pads fitted as well as the new(wish) wheels. Still have a problem though when I got the car there was a faint scraping sound coming from the rear passenger side this has become louder. After looking at the state of the discs I considered a stuck or sticking pad or where the discs had worn the brake pad was rubbing. So had the brakes done today and the noise is still there maybe worse than before it sounds like a metallic scrape that starts about 8-10 mph it does get slightly less when going around a right hand corner. Could this be a wheel bearing or worse case a diff. There are no clunks or knocks just this scraping noise, any ideas or advice would be appreciated.

Sounds as though it's something on the o/s catching on the hub. Parking brake shoes or hold down springs likely contender?

If it was the o/s/r wheel bearing you would likely get a growl or rumble from that side when turning left and putting load onto the o/s. Have you tried easing up on the handbrake with the button pushed when this noise comes on to see if it makes any difference?

Is possible to remove and drive temporarily without the hand brake shoes and springs to determine if its that?
