Hi just spoke to the mechanic who removed the brake disc and components and drove the car with the calliper clamped off. The noise is still there "bugger" but at least the brakes are new and eliminated. So that leaves what I suspected diff whine, I guess thats the reason the car was sold in the first place.

The mech has changed the oil so see what that brings as a temp measure, so going to have to change the diff at some point, I was hoping not to but hey-ho. Does anyone have any experience with this problem and can point me in the right direction with this, either getting the diff rebuilt or getting a second hand one and fitting that. I know Spurs fan in a coupe is breaking one at the mo so will contact him later.

Had the car dropped off and now the mechanic is saying he is not sure if its the diff or not, one thing was in the wet the noise went for a while. So looks like I'm back to square one may have to bite said bullet and go to BMW.

Ouch !!
Any clues in condition of drained oil - e.g. burnt, sludge or metallic bits?

Presume you are hearing it when driving under load. You could try putting the back end up on axle stands and running it in low gear to see if you can pinpoint the area noise is from. I've done that on mine to find where a scraping noise was coming from.

Hi oil was fairly clean no metal bits, the diff has no clunks, the noise is there even when freewheeling with the clutch depressed the mech put it on axle stands and ran it up but could not pin point the noise, so not sure what to do next.

Hello mate,
I would first check to see if the crack is showing on the other side of the disc too_One of my rear discs had a crack that started from the bellhousing area to the outer edge of the lip, on both sides. They were original bmw discs with almost no lip wear.
I wouldnt take a gamble with the disc breaking apart and potentially jaming one of the rear wheels.
I would buy a new set of ATE discs and pads. ATE are the original manufacturer for BMW.
cheapest at carparts4less
You may also want to adjust the handbrake whilst you there.
Good luck!
