Wow, that’s a lot of work. If that is what they do and there are no issues afterwards I guess it’s wait and see. I hope they include a total clean of the block in that, ie they remove the engine and power clean it before stripping it. I would be tempted to ask for photo updates for that kind of money, or,they allow you to go and have a look.

Tony.

Hard to believe that it needs that much work. If I were you I would take Tony's advice clean it off & see if you can work out where its leaking from yourself first. If that's not possible perhaps there is a forum member close by who could have a look & give you some advice before you commit to having that much work done.

Thanks,
Sounds like very good advice.

No problems,
Most general servicing items I source through local factors, anything specific tho, I generally tend to search for.
What are the garage actually doing ?

They are talking about removing the engine. I
will ask them to steam clean the engine to pinpoint exactly where the leak is. The car has had a lot of engine maintenance in the past including a new head in 2019.

Just out of interest is the engine a M44 (dohc) or m43tu (sohc) ?

Normally I would only pull a head if I suspected a head gasket , ie creamy oil, expansion tank bubbling , build up of pressure in coolant hoses.

So I'm assuming that's the reason there doing that, not to bad on a 8v head, say £40 for skim and labour to remove and install, m44 bit more involved, being dohc

1/ if you had a head gasket failure, your car would defo start to overheat..!!

2/ seems odd that you drove it 180 miles and not overheating, obviously you are going on what garage have said to you.
3/ think I would be looking for signs of coolant loss on block, check for exhaust gasses in expansion tank, the possibility of loose head bolts, before I engaged in invasive surgery..!!
