I will go with @t-tony's advice: clean the engine thoroughly then check where the leeks are. I am not convinced you'd need to spend all that money fixing the issue.
Off course, after this exercise, you have to decide wether or not it's worth spending the money; that's something else. Faced with a £3000 bill I would just break the car (not scrap) then make as much as I could from selling the parts.
