So what is the scenario with an MOT when a Z3 has had it's airbags removed, roll over hoops removed, etc, etc?
Interested for obvious reasons!
Roll bars are not a testable item, whereas Air Bags are.

Hence my point about colour!

Tony.
I think the details that come up on the PNC are more than just colour.
Don't think there could be a scenario where traffic cops would do a reg check on a car and it comes back as a red Z3, but the car looks like a red Ferrari and the coppers say "well it's red so must be fine, let's move on Ted". ;)

Tony's right hoops no issue.
But if tester realises it had a airbag and that it's been removed ( most will by reg date) then yes it is a fail.

I am now very confused. The rebodies I have seen ALL have the airbags removed (you have to), so how do they get MOTd?

But the chassis/monocoque, suspension, engine, steering, transmission are all the same donor vehicle.

The bolt on body panels are not part of the original monocoque body so don't affect the vehicle in any way if they are replaced with bolt on fg replacements.

It might not look like a z3 but because all the notifiable bits are still there it is still the same car a z3.

Changing the v5 description obfuscates the make/model so plod won't know what he's looking at so can't cause a fuss. And for that reason I will have the v5 changed so plod won't know what he's looking at and I'll have an easier life.

What does ESQ mean. 507ESQ
esq means 'like', or similar to. So 507-like.

I wonder if the DVLA would be happy with 'BMW Z3 with different body panels and a retro interior'? Might not fit on the line!

Testable items. Is that only if they exist? If the wheel has been changed for one that doesn't have an airbag and the dash warning light disabled then is it a fail?

You refit the original steering wheel for the mot.
Then switch back afterwards.
It’s like having black and silver number plates all year, but yellow and white on test day, (so I’ve been told 😙)

But the later Z3s (as far as I know) also had side airbags. A bit more difficult changing the whole interior for the MOT?

I am just about to buy a Z3 and haven't seen what it has (or hasn't) got installed yet. I don't want to buy a car and not be able to make it what I want it to be. Otherwise I will have a dented Z3, which I really am not interested in.

Tony is the man to ask.
My MOT tester said that if my 250 was registered as a BMW Z3 it would fail on missing airbag. However as. Tribute California he could pass it as there
was no information on wether or not it should have an air bag. Grey area maybes and some testers may not be so helpful.
side airbags, passenger air bag and roll over hoops can be removed. It’s a bit like your spare wheel, if it is in the car it must have legal tread, if it’s stored in your garage it can be bald.
I believe an MOT tester is able to change the color of a car during an MOT test, again one from Tony.

I don't think the MOT has colour on the database.

Remove all evidence of the airbags, and you should be ok (unless you crash, then you are the airbag). Don't forget to remove the "Airbag fitted" decal on the passenger door jamb.

Just like Mission Impossible, this post will self-destruct in three seconds  💣

Z3 2.2 Kobra rebody (see pic)
Mine is registered as Make: BMW Model: Tribute Kobra. It wasn't what I asked for but contacting the DVLA has a an essence of lottery about it...

I have gone through 3 MOTs so far and the lack of steering or passengers airbag hasn't phased three different testers as it is 'not' a Z3 on the V5 or MOT dbase. As I have a new dash there is not warning light to test either. My last tester made a note of mileage before changing dash as its now only on 1000 miles is.

And yes I realise the risks of removing airbags and roll hoops and willing to take them. I drive like a milkman so not worried about the speed I'm carrying into corners etc.

Mine had colour change on respray so did that V5 change on another time and was very straightforward

Dave. You said "It wasn't what you asked for".

What did you ask for?

Did you do it using form V627? or did you just write a letter to them?
