Just a thought, there was a thread from one of the guys a while back that spoke of over cranking the engine and it had some sort of electronic safety device which stopped the engine starting.??

Billy after a bit of research this could also be a problem seems that condition can occur but 1sf thing is to sort the rolling code problem that is throwing up the d1 code.

Agree with @BillyB I've got that in mind if the D1 error clears and it still won't go. But the over-cranking issue can only arise if there was something stopping the engine from starting in the first place. It can't be the original issue itself if you see what I mean.

But it could be there now after the failed start attempts seemingly with a lot of code readers this fault does not show .

I have never cranked it long. Maybe an issue but not sure. It doesn't take long to see its obviously not going to start.

Ordered the code reader and bits today. Will see what I can do when they get here.

I have managed to get an old laptop with INPA on it. Not sure how it works and looking forward to getting my own stuff that was recommended by MrScalex. But until that comes I am hoping this may do what I need.

I can plug it in and look around but don't know how to set up keys or sync the EWS and DME.
Any help would be appreciated. I have no idea what I'm looking at or if it will even edit the system.

I can’t remember without having the software in front of me.

If no one else has advised you I’ll try and remember to check tomorrow.

No worries. Not sure its even working right. Either that or I really don't have a clue. Will have a look at it again tomorrow.

The other software should be here Saturday and I'm more interested and hopeful with that.

I had the exact same issue, I brought a new ECU with EWS delete from e-bay (incidentally it was programmed for a few more BHP) but after fitting that, it turned out to be a chaffed wire coming through the bulkhead into the back of the glovebox. So a grommet and a bit of insulating tape fixed it. We traced it to that as we did not have a live in the diagnostic port, as soon as we fed a live it started each time!

In this instance it sounds like it may have been your own decision to buy the EWS/DME. But there are various cases on forums of people being told they need to spend what is around £2k I think to buy these parts new from BMW to fix their problem only for the problem to return a week later. It's why I always suggest exploring everything you can before parting with money.

I have to say you did well to spot that chaffed wire.

It does scare me if this thing throws a wobble in the middle of nowhere. Not sure why the EWS and DME got upset with each other.

Great news Delk glad was able to start the ball rolling and a bit of software recalibrate was all that was needing now you have Inpa you can look at stuff yourself now .
Hopefully it has just been a glitch in the system and won't re appear.
Stephen.
