It wasnt inpa. I used the scanner and software recommended by MrScalex. Very easy to use and took longer to download then repair. Not even sure what it was and will look later. For now just happy its running.

Great news @Delk

The DME is the big boss of the setup. After each successful startup the DME advises the EWS what password it will expect at next startup.

When the EWS releases the starter it hands the baton on to the DME. Amongst the many checks the DME makes it will say to the EWS - what was the passcode I gave you last time? If the EWS gets it wrong the DME won’t release the ignition.

In reality the password is actually just a position in a table of codes which the DME ‘rolls’ down 1 by 1. Hence ‘rolling code’.

I don’t know all the reasons it can happen. But the battery going flat is 100% one of them because it’s happened to me. However just because your battery goes flat it doesn’t mean the issue will happen.

What happens if you are in the middle of nowhere without your laptop? It’s a breakdown. What happens if you or your garage don’t know how to fix it? I’ve seen Z3s for sale dead at reduced prices where this is almost certainly the issue.

sorry I didn't respond, I've not been around much this season.
Glad the others fixed it, it was beyond me anyway!
Thanks anyway.

Tony.

I'm still not sure why it happened but I am happy to say it's still running fine.

Intake hose is cracked so ordered a new one to perfectly fix the vacuum leak but other then that it's just getting around to the small stuff.

You ideally need to do a rolling code reset first. It’s 30 secs work with the right kit. It could save you an awful lot of money if it works. As well as agro with a garage that makes out they know what they are doing when they don’t. Anecdotally reading many stories over the years on various forums, electronic control systems are a big black blagging hole for most garages.

Do you have a laptop? If so PM me and I can point you in the right direction of how to do this yourself for £25. And leave yourself with a superb piece of diagnostics kit for the future.
Hi, I am following this thread as I am having the exact same problem in Pontefract West Yorks if anyone is nearby and can help,
