OK you hard core F1 fans, all 5 of us, don't forget your predictions (@Mint) .....

What time does the race start?
In Melbourne, the race begins at 4pm local time on Sunday (Australia Eastern Daylight Time). That equates to 5am GMT back in the United Kingdom. As final preparations take place, the last practice session is 2pm AEDT and 3am GMT on Saturday. Qualifying begins later that day at 5pm in Melbourne, 6am GMT.

Where can I watch it?
• Coverage of all three practices, qualifying and the live race will be on Sky Sports F1 HD and Fox Sports in Australia.

• Extended highlights of the race in the UK are on Channel 4, 1.30pm -4pm GMT on Sunday. In Australia FoxSports will have an analysis programme after the race from 6.15pm AEDT.

• And if pictures aren’t a prerequisite for your enjoyment, Radio 5 Live will broadcast final practice, qualifying and the race in the UK, with 3AW holding the rights in Australia.

What should I look out for?
Qualifying: New rules mean that while qualifying remains in three sections lasting an hour, cars will now be eliminated one at a time at 90 second intervals during those sessions.

That means Q1 will last for a total of 16 minutes, after seven minutes the slowest driver will be eliminated, with another car being eliminated every 90 second – 15 cars are left to progress to Q2.

Q2 will be the same format, lasting for a total of 15 minutes, after six minutes the slowest driver will be eliminated with another car being eliminated every 90 seconds until eight cars are left to progress to Q3.

Q3 will be the same format, lasting for a total of 14 minutes, the slowest driver will be eliminated after five minutes with another car being eliminated every 90 seconds until the last car standing is on pole.

Pitwall shenanigans: The other main rule change is to stop teams giving drivers’ radio guidance on how their rivals are getting on. Drivers have been sceptical about how this will be policed but race director Charlie Whiting is confident he has the numbers in place to listen into all communications.

How the rookie team gets on: Haas F1, the latest team to join the grid, should be more well equipped than other recent new teams due to links with Ferrari.

McLaren’s performance: Practice did not begin too shabbily for Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso on Friday after a dismal season for the marque in 2015. How the car shapes up in qualifying and the race will offer clues as to how far the Honda engine has turned things around.

Lewis Hamilton fastest as Nico Rosberg crashes at Australian GP

Hamilton "might be smiling in the garage" at Rosberg's misfortune
Rosberg lost control accelerating out of Turn Six on a wet track, breaking off his front wing, and had to stop on the circuit to avoid dropping debris.

How Australian GP qualifying unfolded

Summary
  1. Hamilton on pole, Rosberg 2nd, Vettel 3rd, Raikkonen 4th
  2. New qualifying elimination format ends with no cars on the track
  3. Format comes under criticism as drivers choose not to respond to times set
  4. Kvyat out in Q1, McLarens out in Q2, Toro Rossos in Q3
Just got up? A summary...
As there is a good chance a few of you are just waking up, here's summary of what has happened this morning:

  • New format - where a driver eliminated every 90s - used for the first time in qualifying
  • System results in no drivers on track for final couple of minutes, with Lewis Hamilton having already secured pole
  • Drivers and team bosses criticise the format
  • I ran out of biscuits
Ecclestone, who is not in Australia, had this to say:

"It was pretty crap. But this is what we've got, until we can change it," he said.
"I watched it, but I have to say I wasn't enthusiastic about it from day one.
"The only thing about this [format] is that the quick guys could have run off the road, or done anything a little bit silly, and then you would get a mixed-up grid, which is what we wanted.
"It just happens that Mercedes are still very, very good."

Lewis Hamilton thinks something "definitely" needs to change about the new F1 qualifying format.

"Bring us some tyres, make us all use those tyres, give us more laps so people are constantly watching," he says.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff:

"I think the new qualifying format is pretty rubbish. We need to discuss it. Everyone is trying to do their best to improve the show and if we haven't we need to discuss it.
"The solution is not good in my opinion and that is why we have to look at it again."

Mercedes non-executive chairman Niki Lauda:

"I fully agree with Christian Horner [about qualifying] - have a quick discussion before Bahrain. Everyone makes mistakes - this is a big mistake."

Nobody likes the new F1 qualifying, because it’s rubbish

No one, not even pole position man Lewis Hamilton, likes the new elimination countdown qualifying format.

From Christian Horner to Martin Brundle and Niki Lauda, the call to scrap it is unanimous. Not surprisingly, fans on social media aren’t happy either. As for those at the track in Melbourne, they must be livid.
Here at Badger GP we’re pretty miffed – this is no way to start a brand new season.

Feedback from fans at the track:

Feedback from friends at the track was that they couldn’t tell what was going on, didn’t have clear sight of a screen and those that did had no countdown timer on it so had no clue of where things were and then saw drivers crawl past (if already out). Also saw drivers out of car and realised in some cases they’d given up as time was against them, people left stands 4 mins before chequered flag.

Crofty: “It needs looking at, and it needs to be done in time for Bahrain.”
Brundle: “You are a diplomat, young man. I think it needs to be thrown in a skip.”

Rosberg wins in Australia

Summary
  1. Rosberg wins, Hamilton 2nd, Vettel 3rd, Ricciardo 4th
  2. Race delayed after huge crash involving Alonso and Gutierrez
  3. Ferraris jump Mercedes at start, but Vettel has pit stop trouble
  4. Alonso, Gutierrez, Kvyat, Raikkonen, Haryanto, Ericsson out

One hell of a crash.....

Gene Haas, owner of Haas, whose driver Esteban Gutierrez was involved with that Fernando Alonso crash: "Our car came out the better, Alonso's car was destroyed. He was up and walking and that was important. In Nascar we have incidents like this almost every race and we're pretty used to it."

There's a lot of chat about a new halo safety system. If that crash would have happened with the halo attached it would have been very difficult to get Alonso out of the car.

This is why I love the Iceman.....
Team radio

Kimi Raikkonen: "Something happened. I broke something."

Yes, Kimi. You're on fire.
"There's something broken in the car," he says.

Then suddenly, fire spurts out of the air box above Raikkonen's head as he stops the car in his box.

What's Raikkonen's reaction? To nonchalantly climb out as marshals rush in to extinguish the fire.
