stunts like that only work when the points are the other way around. When taking out both cars leaves the points as they are, and that being in your favor. Schumacher did it to someone in Australia one year ( Hill maybe?) to win a championship.

Huge gamble to try and take someone out, survive and not get penalised.

Lewis Hamilton dominated Brazilian Grand Prix practice.

Lewis Hamilton set the pace in second practice at the Brazilian Grand Prix as Mercedes dominated the first day at the penultimate race of the season.

Hamilton and team-mate Valtteri Bottas were first and second in both sessions, the new champion just 0.048 seconds ahead of the Finn in the afternoon.

Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo was next, 0.228secs off Hamilton and 0.132secs ahead of Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen was fifth ahead of Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen.

Fair to say Valtteri Bottas is over the moon with that pole position - the third of his career.

"YEEESSSSSSS!" he screams over the radio before pulling into parc ferme.

And someone else who is happy is Fernando Alonso.

He's told he has qualified seventh, but will move up to sixth on the grid after Daniel Ricciardo takes his grid penalty.

"YES!" he says.

'It was so close'
Valtteri Bottas, who took pole position: "It feels good. It was so close with Seb all through qualifying.

"It's a shame Lewis went out but I'm happy I could do a good job for the team.

"Avoiding mistakes will be crucial tomorrow as well as a good start. I'm really looking forward to it."

'Mistakes can happen'
Mercedes non-executive chairman Niki Lauda, speaking on Sky Sports: "Mistakes can happen. Lewis is very upset. I have no problem with it. For Bottas what a fantastic result. We're positively surprised to beat Vettel. Bottas came back in massive top form."
