And with that, everyone is back in the pits.

Actually, scrap that. Pascal Wehrlein is out there on his lonesome.

Renault are done for the day but Lewis Hamilton isn't. He's leaving the Mercedes garage now.

8:24
And that's a wrap for Sauber.

The rain is indeed heavy once again, bouncing back up off the circuit as Lewis Hamilton circulates.

Fernando Alonso is told that the team have the data they need and to "bring the car home".

Bring it home he does. He returns to the pitlane, as does Lewis Hamilton and that looks to be that for the day.

Three minutes until the session officially comes to an end.

Chequered flag
The chequered flag falls and Lewis Hamilton finishes second practice quickest.

Not a representative time, though, with only five drivers setting times because of the heavy rain.

That was great if you got up early for second practice because apart from paper boats sailing down the pit lane, not a lot went on.

Toro Rosso's Carlos Sainz Jr. says a minor misjudgement led to his sizeable accident during the opening practice session for the Japanese Grand Prix.

Sainz Jr. lost control exiting the hairpin and speared into the barriers on the left-hand-side of the circuit, the impact causing front-end damage to his STR12, and scattering debris onto the track.

Sainz Jr. was uninjured in the accident and heaped praise on his mechanics for repairing the wreckage in time for the youngster to complete an installation lap in the rain-hit second session.

"Obviously, the accident in FP1 was a bit of a pity," said Sainz Jr., who has a 20-place grid penalty for taking on new power unit parts".

"I didn't expect that to happen, I just clipped the outside kerb a bit too much and it sent me into a spin and then into the barriers.
It looked quite incredible on the TV, but luckily it wasn't such a big one from inside the cockpit.
We can't forget that a minimal miscalculation here can make you pay a big price!
I'm happy that the mechanics could put the car back together for FP2 – they did an amazing job like they always do, pushing for me and the team".

Mercedes' Valtteri Bottas is poised for a five-place grid penalty at this weekend's Japanese Grand Prix, with a new gearbox to be fitted to his W08.

Bottas has endured a difficult string of races since Formula 1's summer break, with Mercedes chief Toto Wolff commenting that addressing the Finn's form is a "priority" for Mercedes.

Drivers must use the same gearbox for six consecutive events, unless they retire from the previous race, and as a result Bottas is set to receive a five-place grid penalty.

Bottas finished fifth quickest during the dry-weather opening practice session at Suzuka and did not run in the rain-affected second session.

This is a first for Lewis Hamilton.
He has never been on pole position at Suzka but has won two of the last three races at the circuit.
Win tomorrow, and is the title race as good as over?

Lewis Hamilton, who secured the 71st pole position of his career: "Incredible. It's been a really good day. Every lap was fantastic. I never did great in qualifying here. To finally get the balance here, thanks to the great work of my engineers, I finally went out on track and did a time. The car is crazy here. I was running out of opportunities so had to make it stick."
