Pascal Wehrlein stops to give Sebastian Vettel a lift home.

A very strange incident.

"I could have closed the door," Lewis Hamilton says to Max Verstappen in the pre-podium room. "But I was thinking about the championship."

Lewis was very gracious in defeat - he applauded Max on the slowing down lap and was the first one to congratulate him when he got out of the car. He's in a very good place in the championship standings.

A 34 point lead for Lewis Hamilton with five races remaining.

Sebastian Vettel loses ground on Hamilton but without that superb drive it could have been much worse.

Lance Stroll on his collision with Sebastian Vettel:
"I don't know. It was a strange incident. I was driving very slowly, back into the pit lane.
The race wasn't going on so it wasn't intentional for either of us.
He came around the outside like the race was still going. It all happened very quickly.
When the stewards look into it you always hope nothing happens."

'Stroll wasn't looking'

Sebastian Vettel has given his take on the incident with Lance Stroll to Sky Sports: "I went to the outside to pick up a bit of rubber. I think Lance wanted to do the same but wasn't looking and I was already there."

Jos Verstappen, father of Max: "He really deserved this win. He drove brilliant. You could see the car was looking strong. He had a chance to overtake, he did and he controlled the situation.

"This is always very good, very welcome. He deserved it and I think it's good like this. I am very happy."

Max Verstappen will go down in history as the winner of the last Malaysian Grand Prix.

He's the 11th different winner of the race and the second Red Bull driver to win it in as many years after Daniel Ricciardo's triumph last year.

Stewards take no action on Vettel-Stroll incident. No driver "wholly or predominantly to blame"

Gasly completed maiden race without drink......

Toro Rosso's Pierre Gasly revelled in his "special" Formula 1 debut in Malaysia, and revealed that he completed the 56-lap race without a fully-functioning drinks bottle.

Gasly was parachuted into Toro Rosso for events in Malaysia and Japan as a replacement for Daniil Kvyat, in order to help the team evaluate its 2018 options.

He qualified in 15th position and stayed out of trouble to finish in 14th spot, having been passed by Haas' Romain Grosjean during the closing stages.

"It was a really physical and tough race – my drink system didn't work properly, the water was going all over my face and not in my mouth! – and it felt like a long race…
"But with such a big adrenaline boost that I got, I just kept focusing until the end."

Formula 1 debutant Pierre Gasly says he "feels sorry" for Daniil Kvyat after taking his seat at Toro Rosso in a late-season switch.

Kvyat has been "stood down" for the Malaysian and Japanese events, amid a challenging campaign, with GP2 champion and Super Formula title contender Gasly given an F1 shot.

Although delighted with the opportunity, the Frenchman has admitted that he feels for Kvyat, who was also demoted from Red Bull to Toro Rosso early last year.

"Unfortunately, that's how it works in this sport," commented Gasly.

A bizarre collision with Lance Stroll’s Williams on the warm-down lap left Vettel’s car with its rear-left wheel draped over the back of the chassis, as well as possible damage to the gearbox. If that needs replacing, Vettel would have to drop down the grid at Suzuka as the existing gearbox has not completed the required six events.

Yesterday’s incident became even more controversial after Vettel removed his steering wheel from his car – which you are not allowed to do – and hitched a ride home on the sidepod of Pascal Wehrlein’s Sauber.

Mark Webber was penalised for doing likewise in Singapore a few years ago, although he actually ran on to the track to climb on to the Ferrari, and the penalty was because it was his third reprimand of the season.

Still, many felt that Vettel was to blame for yesterday’s crash, and that combined with the steering wheel removal and the taxi ride home, he might well have been punished.
